  • Thanks so much for this article and especially the pictures. I have heard many people say that they are more apt to travel out of the area or state to see the sights and neglect interesting ones near their own home.

  • Nearby is Bell Mountain, which is not quite as high as Tom Sauk, but has better vistas to the south. It is a natural area, so no motorized vehicles within a 3 to 5 mile radius. Where does the name Tom Sauk come from?

  • "The legend lives on from the Chippewa down", actually, the mountain is named after a famous Piankashaw cheiftan named Sauk-Ton-Qua, whom the white settlers called Taum Sauk. The entire legend can be found at "http://missouri-vacations.com/taum-sauk-mountain-state-park/index.htm".
