What kind of videos would you like to see on our site? Or do you even watch them?Wednesday, June 11, 2008
Let's face it — at the Southeast Missourian, we're newspaper people. This whole video thing is new to us, though we know it's the wave of the future. So we're still trying to figure out exactly what kind of videos our online audience wants to see.
We know for sure that video of breaking news or hard news — things like floods, car crashes, crime — work well. It's worth your while to watch these things, because you just don't see them every day. And we know that shorter is typically better. Videos that are over, let's say two and a half minutes, just don't seem to garner much interest. I don't have time to watch videos longer than that, either. So we're asking for your help to guide us as to what sorts of video you'd like to see. That's the open-ended question: What should we focus on in our video efforts? But I'm also going to give you a selection of our videos — a somewhat representative sampling of the types of videos we've made recently — to see which get a thumbs-up and which don't. It's come to our attention as well that many people may not even watch the videos, because they don't have broadband. The Cape Girardeau Municipal Band's first concert of the season

Matt Sanders, former arts and entertainment editor and reporter for the Southeast Missourian, was appointed editor of the paper's online operation this year. In his blog Extra Edition, he gives readers an extra dose of news they won't find in our print edition or elsewhere on our Web site, and gives them a glimpse of the operation of the new seMissourian.com.

Lots of responses here.
Before I start, let me say Snoops, I've heard your avatar is offending some people. Might you consider a change?
I'll check with our tech guys about changes from the flash format to another. Can't make any guarantees.
Thanks for the tip on mediastorm.org, dclinco. I checked out the one called "The Ninth Floor," and it was great journalism.
Actually, we're looking to do some more stuff like this — audio slideshows. When we switched sites there was some problem with programs and file formats, but we may have that fixed now.
Question to all: Are audio slideshows (with sounds over still pictures) better than video?
To TommyStix, note taken on the commission videos. They've been very well-received.
To Snoops, we've been considering producing some short "show" type of videos. Trying to figure out how to juggle the resources.
And to those who don't watch the videos, thanks for that feedback, as well. Keep the comments coming.
Never watch the videos...I go to the newspaper site to read the articles.
Definately County Commission. They are fun to laugh at.
I want to be able to see the county commission meetings like you've been doing recently. I don't mind if the meetings are edited -- video highlighting the major points is better than nothing.
I seldom watch the videos. IMO, it's much faster to read an article, and I personally retain more of the information that way.
I would like to see more local dance and music offerings. Local Musicians, Bands, groups, troupes, companies, performers and so on... And Yes I watch the videos I like.
Perhaps a little more reporting in the videos. Check out http://mediastorm.org/. These group of journalists–not just reporters–know how to create a story with substance and a human connection rather than running video without commentary.
at least an option to view a quicktime version. Flash creates memory leaks (tech-jargon) which is killer to mobile device and laptop batteries.
No... Flash is the way to go. It's fast and you don't have to download any files or new windows.
I'd like to see videos NOT in Flash format. This doesn't work on an iPhone!
