Some Sunday reading (Rush Limbaugh) and video viewingSaturday, July 5, 2008
Pine Bluff defeated the Charleston Riverdogs 12-11 Saturday night in another wild battle between the two teams in the Mid-South Regional at Capaha Field. The Braves, who had won 18-17 in Friday's tourney opener against Charleston, will take two cracks at beating the Capahas on Sunday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. The Capahas won Saturday's meeting and are chasing their fourth straight regional crown and automatic berth to the NBC World Series. I stumbled on some interesting Internet videos related to sports in Southeast Missouri while researching some other items, but first a good Sunday read about another regional topic. This blog covers sports rather than politics, but Rush Limbaugh is more than just politics for this area, and he was profiled in this weekend's edition of New York Times Magazine. This story (which has a slideshow featuring a 1972 photo of Limbaugh with his father and grandfather) has regional interest because it's about Limbaugh, mentions that Antonin Scalia has been in town for dinner and says Limbaugh has "been spending more time with his extended family in Cape Girardeau, where he's so popular that the municipality runs a Rush Limbaugh tour for visitors." And for the hard-core sports fans, the story says Limbaugh "toys with the idea of buying an N.F.L. franchise." Aren't the Rams for sale?
Web items of note Dalhousie Golf Club is featured in this video on Golfweek.com. It runs nearly nine minutes and covers many aspects of the course and a little bit about Cape Girardeau. You can also catch videos of former Southeast Missouri State basketball player Natalie Purcell on both youtube.com and fiba.com. Purcell plays for the Christchurch Sirens and is a member of the Tall Ferns, which is the name for New Zealand's national team that will play in the Olympic Games in Beijing later this year. One more basketball item I found odd but possibly helpful for youngsters. It's not everyday a high school athlete has put together a book to help other players get better, but Webster Groves graduate Drew Hanlen is selling a book of training drills on his Web site. Hanlon helped the Statesmen to the state title, beating Jackson twice in the 2007-08 season, including a Class 5 sectional meeting. He is headed to Belmont, a Division I school in Nashville.
