Fireworks concerns aired at city council meeting

Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Cape Girardeau police arrested 17 people, including 11 juveniles, for fireworks violations this season, according to information presented Monday to the city council.

The statistics are for the period beginning June 27 and ending Saturday, and represent a 20 percent decrease in the number of calls for service from the previous year. The Cape Girardeau Police Department set up a special unit to handle only fireworks calls this year.

Fire chief Rick Ennis said 2008 seemed like a much milder year and call volumes were down the entire week. Ennis said four firework vendors had tents set up, and all cooperated with inspections.

Resident Don Howard appeared before the council to express his concerns about fireworks in the city. Mayor Jay Knudtson said that while the city listens to his concerns, it tries to find a compromise that works for everyone. Howard said he does not want the council to "put a Band-Aid" on a problem that could claim homes or lives.

No injuries were reported from Independence Day fireworks, and Knudtson said he hoped that was because police were working hard to get the word out about safety.

"I think it really reflects the fact that the awareness is out there," he said.

Do you ever remember being a kid? Guidelines need to be posted in the paper and on KFVS news during the two weeks fireworks are sold for those people who feel the need to call the police/fire department to report blatant misuse of fireworks. The guidelines need to be clear and specific so just real concerns are called in, not those of crabby, sour adults who have lost touch with their youth.

Yes...let's further disenfranchise the rights of our children to be children. After all, children playing (anything) could potentially be dangerous. Let's place them all in rubber rooms, and play kum ba yah tapes for them until they turn 18.

Grey Wolf:

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or you're stupid.

Anytime someone tries to use government (force) to get you to behave they way they think you should behave, it's a political issue. That's what Don Howard is trying to do.

In addition, you are obviously not paying attention to what is being purported by our current presidential candidates. They are substantially different agendas.

I'll sum up:

Obama: "My brothers, it's time for us to return to slavery! Help me empower your slavemasters! Socialism is good!"

McCain: "The American family is being sucked dry by the socialists. End Social Security. End welfare. End socialized medicine. Maintain the military to protect and spread liberty."

When fireworks are banned...only the bad guys will have fireworks.

If our fair mayor had bothered to turn on his scanner and listen as the police and fire departments were sent here, there, and everywhere (including the war zone on the south side of Cape), then he would know that there is a serious problem with the misuse of fireworks. Open your eyes, people don't want to follow the rules in regards to the fireworks, then take them away, or better yet put a bigger tax on them to pay for the extra services the city is expected to provide.

I'm not on welfare by a long shot. Retired military officer, Tricare for Life. Whatever Medicare doesn't pay, Tricare covers the rest. My wife and I both have had surgery since we were 65, and have never received a bill in the mail. All we get are EOB's. My wife went to a St. Louis physician for a second opinion, and we received a bill for $42.00. We paid it, and a month later, got a check in the mail from the physician for $42.00. Prescriptions are $3, $6, or $9 if we go to a local pharmacy, 1/3 of that if we do mailorder, and free if we drive up to Scott AFB.

Mussmuggins,
looks as if you are covered.
I assume you are over 65 since your medical care is
free.Either that or you are on Government welfare.
Perhaps thats why you care little about fireworks
burning your home down!Wait!,Your a Republican there
is no way your on welfare or dissability!!!

Greywolf:

My auto and homeowners insurance policies are reviewed annually. The only thing that isn't covered is medical care, I get that free for life, except for part B costs.

Mussmuggins,
So, from your last comment I assume you plan to sit back while someone shoots fireworks at your house because its insured!!Frankly I find that statement
ridiculous and or funny as I am not too sure how you meant it.Just be sure your Family is out of the house
when you allow this to take place. You may also want to check you policy to insure you are properly covered.
Just a thought....

Greywolf:

It's a slow real estate market. That's what I carry insurance for.

Mussmuggins,
I believe I mentioned I prefer not to restrict the use of fireworks!However..unfortunately too many folks do not know the proper use of fireworks. When houses and vehicles are bombarded with them its time the law steps in.As a Libertarian I DO NOT want to prohibit
fireworks or anything else for that matter.City ordinances do have there place! And if these idiots continue to play nasty with their fireworks someones
home or life could be taken! This would be terrible because it could be my home or yours for that matter.

GreyWolf:

You speak of your eroding civil rights on one hand, and taking the 4th of July away from the South Cape residents on the other! That's the pot calling names! The 4th has been celebrated with fireworks since the founding of the nation.

Uberfan20,
not too sure how your comment fits in here!
Both Parties are now one.I prefer to call them
Demopublicans! Both parties have played a huge role over the years in regards to civil liberties errosion!
Some day a new sun will rise and these "DEMOPUBLICANS"
will be nothing but the past.I hope that day comes sooner than later.Bob Barr for President!!

Hey, Don Howard knows what's best for everyone!

Unfortunately we have an entire political party of Howards, Kennedys, Feinsteins, Polosis, Clintons, and Obamas dedicated to telling you how best to lead your life - with a gun at your head.

-- Posted by uberfan20 on Tue, Jul 8, 2008, 9:42 am CDT

The newspaper should check with Cape P.D. and see how many police reports Don Howard has generated in the last 10 years. The police almost just disregard what he says because he continually cries wolf.

Hey Jay!
******* your high horse and drive through the south side below the new hwy and witness the madness that
occurs in this area each Fourth of July!I did!!!My God
man its a war zone in there.Could not see from all the
bottle rocket smoke!Children and young adults shooting them at vehicles as well as homes and each other.I never did see an officer during the 10 minutes I drove through.I am not one who would ban the use of fireworks although after witnessing this behavior I might be inclined to change my opinion on the subject of fireworks within the City Limits!

-- Posted by GREYWOLF on Tue, Jul 8, 2008, 8:06 am CDT

Don Howard needs to move to Sikeston. They don't have fireworks there. They will appreciate his charming demeanor.
