Still seeking your thoughts on the road and bridge program; the cost of the uninsured; 'People's Choice' online; manufacturing job losses

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

Those who read the blog yesterday probably saw my poll on the county's road and bridge program. I got the idea to do a poll after reading Peg McNichol's Sunday article about the problems the program has encountered since getting that big cash after Proposition 1 was passed in 2006.

A lot of people think the program hasn't met expectations. In case you weren't able to vote in the poll yesterday, I'm going to leave it up throughout the day today to get some more votes. Leave comments here, too, if you'd like.

Peg also attended a meeting of the road and bridge advisory board Tuesday night, dealing with some of the issues outlined in the article on Sunday.

The poll

Do you think the county's road program has worked well since Proposition 1 was passed in 2006?

Yes

No

It's too early to tell.

Cost of the uninsured

The Best Years (a.k.a. TBY) September edition printed on Tuesday. If you have no idea what TBY is, that may be because it's not on our website, other than the stories we select out of the magazine to put on seMissourian.com.

This month's issue had an interesting story about the cost to people in Missouri of the millions who don't have health insurance. Stats show that in 2006, 10 working-age uninsured adults died in our state each week. Why?

Regardless of which side you fall on in the debate about what to do about health care, fact is the system is broken. Personally, I see health care as a public good, like roads and police, that shouldn't be a luxury only those with money can afford.

How about you?

'People's Choice' online

The people have spoken!

You may remember when we solicited your votes a few months ago for our local "People's Choice" publication, selecting the best establishments in the area in a variety of business areas.

We've now posted the publication online in PDF format. I must warn you, unless you have a hi-speed connection, you'll probably be downloading this sucker for a while, because it's eight megs.

Small-town water problems

I'm sure you've probably been reading the coverage lately of Chaffee's water problems.

We also have video of Tuesday night's Chaffee City Council meeting, where the discussion was all about water.

Today Peg McNichol is working on a story about small towns in our area in general, and how they deal with maintaining their municipal water supplies with a severe lack of resources.

Should make for some informative reading. That story will be posted Thursday on seMissourian.com.

This just in ...

I just got a Google alert email with some interesting information: the St. Louis Business Journal is reporting that manufacturing jobs in the state dropped by 3 percent from July 2007 to July 2008.

Quite ironic, considering a Ball State survey recently ranked Missouri the No. 1 state for having many factors favorable to manufacturing.

Budman,
To be honest with you, accident reports are some of the most-read things we put on the site. We're giving the people what they want.
And in some cases, we're actually putting information out there people can use on their daily commutes.

Matt, I don't mean to be critical, but do readers really need to know about every traffic accident in cape county? Everyday one of the "today's news" lists a traffic accident. Surely there are more newsworthy items...

I'll keep that in mind, Doctor.

Matt,

I wished the Missourian would do an on-line poll about Universal Health Care. I would be interested in knowing the results
