The cougar attacks; updating the shooting; Gustav's hereThursday, September 4, 2008
Post 1:30 p.m. The news media in Missouri always jump all over these stories: another possible cougar attack has been reported in a place where there aren't supposed to be any cougars. This time the attack isn't too far from us, just a little ways north in Jefferson County. What I find funny about this story is that the Missouri Department of Conservation actually has a Mountain Lion Response Team. Pretty cool. I found this story of an alleged cougar sighting here in Cape Girardeau in 2007. I don't think it panned out. And here's an Associated Press story from 2006 about the ninth and 10th confirmed cougar sightings in the state since 1994. So what do you think? Are these big cats in Missouri just lone predators detached from larger populations, or are cougars really starting to establish themselves in Missouri again. Have you ever seen one?

Wednesday night shooting We recently posted an update to Wednesday night's shooting. The police tell us they've now identified the gun used in the shooting, but still have no suspects. I'm thinking it won't be long until they do have some suspects. Crazy to think that three teenage boys can be shot right here in Cape, isn't it?
Gustav's remnants covering us Hope you're enjoying the rain outside. We can thank the bully named Gustav for it. But at least we haven't been whacked as hard as other areas of the state. For now it seems the rain has pretty much stopped, and now there's just a nasty mist falling from the sky. We can expect more rain throughout the afternoon and tonight, the National Weather Service says. But Friday should be amazing, with sunny skies and a high in the upper 70s. Fall is approaching ...
Results of county road paving program poll Here are the results of the poll I posted on Tuesday about the county's road paving program: Do you think the county's road program has worked well since Proposition 1 was passed in 2006? * Yes: 18.4% (7 votes) * No: 65.8% (25 votes) * It's too early to tell.: 15.8% (6 votes) Comments The nature of the Internet makes it impractical for our staff to review every comment. Before I was married I'd see all kinds of cougars roaming IN Cape.
Since I'm married I don't go out much. I wonder if they are still on the prowl.
Bob
That is probably correct , just a matter of time before those 3 show up on the front page in their own right.
Although another good reason to run would be to avoid being shot again .
I find your comment really funny that it is "crazy" that you think three teenage boys could be shot in Cape. Just look at the article of the "teenage" boy that was arrested for robbery and assualt. I am afraid all three of the ones shot are just like him and it won't be long until their pictures are on the front page like his.. If they really look around where these three were shot I will bet they will find some drugs and a gun or two that were dumped, especially by the one that ran away when the police showed up. You only run away for one reason because you did something wrong and don't want to go to jail......
