Ashley Judd, others discuss Obama policy at Broadway bookstore

Fuel costs, birth control and transparency in government were issues that worked their way into a discussion between actress Ashley Judd, former U.S. senator Jean Carnahan and Melody Barnes, senior domestic policy adviser to Sen. Barack Obama, held Saturday at Broadway Books and Roasting Co. in Cape Girardeau.

The discussion was designed to be an economic policy roundtable talk between the three to promote Obama's plan to support working women and Missouri families.

The event, closed to the public, targeted about 20 local women who were undecided about which presidential campaign to endorse.

"I frankly think our country is being scarred by corruption," Carnahan said, adding that she didn't feel Missourians were better off than they were eight years ago, when gas was $1.45 per gallon.

"Energy is important, and so is getting this country off this dysfunctional addiction to oil," Judd said. She endorsed Obama's New Energy for America plan of spending $150 billion during the next 10 years to create new jobs in renewable energy fields.

Judd, a pro-choice advocate, also addressed the abortion issue, what she called a "divisive and polarizing issue in our society."

Allowing more ready access to birth control means reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies and thus cutting back on abortions, Judd said.

Judd, who also worked on the 2004 John Kerry presidential campaign, said she felt compelled to get involved with Obama's campaign after seeing him accept the Democratic nomination at the Democratic National Convention.

"I was inspired, and I was galvanized," she said.

Judd said she's found a warm reaction to the campaign so far in Missouri. Many members of the Republican Party have been "willing to listen," she said.

Lucas Presson, president of the Southeast Missouri State College Republicans, said the event was well-staged, but rather than offering change it offered the "same old politics we've seen for decades now."

Is there a listing somewhere of the changes Senator Obama has brought to Illinois or the United States Senate?

Is there any historical information out there supporting his comment that he will be an agent of change?

I'd think a change agent would have some sort of track record showing how effectively they've brought about / encouraged change in previous duties, so this shouldn't be too hard to find.

It is absurd that Luca Presson - who is barely two decades old anyway - should be accusing the Obama folks of 'same old politics!' It is his candidates McCain and Palin who have based their entire campaign on lies, and who have the same old special interest representatives as campaign advisors and stratefgists, and the same old tired Republican policies and programs who are the candidates of the past.

My Reply: Despite what liberal think alcoholism and drug addiction are not diseases---they are character choices; so, no if I had my way there would be no disability checks for drunks and addicts.

My Reply: You KNOW you will vote for Obama, don't ******** us. I want a man who will stand up for what is right---not for what the ignorant masses say is right. RIGHT is not negotiable---or relative. Personally I do not want a man in the White House that condones killing innocent unborn children, that promotes gay marriage, that wants to cow tow to terrorists, who wants to take more my hard earned money and give it to people who refuse to work. GIve me a man who is morally straight and clear minded who will stand up for family values and defend this great nation both domestically and abroad.

My Reply: With our argument probably nothing. It was a snide jab that I should not have made. That being said, I find it extremely ironic that the black students are the ones lagging behind in test scores. Figures do not lie. It has gotten so bad that one of candidates for the Supt. job in St. Louis Public Schools actually said that the traditional classroom was not suited for young African American males. (Sunday 9/14/08 St. Louis Post Dispatch) He was black and everyone goes YES! Praise him for his ideas. Had I said that, I would lose my job because I am white. It would be interesting to compare the Little Rock 9's scores with those of black students today.

My Reply: Well I DID trace back MY roots and my family DID own slaves in Cape County in the early 1800's. Farming is a losing proposition today. I like to MAKE money.

To John in Jackson, you are correct, all these politicians do is tell lies to get in the door! I agree with you on that, that is why in my last post I said I may not even vote because I have been watching different political shows and they are all telling stories and going back on what they originally said. I am so sick of this already. I have several friends also who would rather vote independent, because they feel neither of the two candidates are not worthy of their vote!

No ... it has nothing to do with a central limit theorem. And my comment to which you posted had nothing to do with (INSERT RANDOM ECONOMIC AND/OR POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY HERE).

Reading for context is not your strong suit. Perhaps I confused you though, as I am an independent voter and we are a confused bunch. Well, at least that's what you believe.

I applaud your time investment in beers; however, there is most definitely a pattern in pie. The more slices I use to divide the pie, the more likely I'll be able to eat some of my wife's portion.

For example, if I slice my pie to get eight pieces, I can usually get that fifth piece (slightly over half) without my wife saying anything. But if I slice into just four pieces, my wife will contest my reaching for that third piece (much more than half). Interestingly enough, this also works with pizza.

I'm not sure what the equal distribution theory is, but I assume you're referring to the central limit theorem. Although polls accross the board show that the presidential election is 50-50, you will not find a normal distribution across sub sets.

For example, union members will have a population density favoring socialism, while engineers will vote for capitalism almost on the whole.

Although I have quite a bit of talent for physics, I've chosen to apply what I've learned on a lesser scale so I can spend more time drinking beer.

If the socialists would get out of the way, we'd advance physics at a much higher rate. Even with them out of the way I don't believe we'll ever to find a unifying theory (see link for latest try).

We won't ever find a pattern in pi either.

There are plenty of idiots and lazy people in our United States ... they don't confine themselves to any political party, race, gender, or part of the country. There's a boat load of scum bags in both political parties.

CPGnative- I believe you have nailed it. Listen up fellow conservatives, until some (not all obviously) of you get over skin color and who is married to who, the GOP will lose ground.

Before you crucify another person, as I've mentioned earlier, I'm not marching in favor of same-sex marriages, but I'm not looking forward to a theocracy either. Lets leave governments run on a specific religion in total to Iran and other Middle East states. Ask God to bless this country, and then, deal with the fact that it is a democracy and not all U.S. citizens go to Cape Bible Chapel.

Thank You for chapter & verse! I disagree with your interpretation of these verses, I think that verse 11 clarifies that those that Paul was talking to had quit doing these things, but I am not really equipped or wanting to have a Bible debate at the moment.

Neither candidate can do a thing about your situation, Congress spends the money and makes the laws, the President just proposes laws and budgets and approves or disapproves what congress passes. Congress is the body that *****- up our economy and finances. For instance, Congress is the body that set up Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac.

In John 3:16 the Bible says ..."that whosoever believes in Him shall have eternal life."

That is "whosoever" not "whosoever except..."


McCain doesn't use a computer because he can't! Just like he can't lift his arms above his shoulders and can't fully bend one of his knees because of war injuries, his fingers don't work good enough to type.

It's stuff like this that gets twisted and twisted until the truth is lost and then we blindly elect yet another Republican, under whom the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Like taking candy from a baby.
I never cease being astounded by how our economy is in the toilet, working people can't afford gas, food or their mortgage and 2 wars are being raging in the middle east...yet when election time rolls around we forget all about it and cast our vote to continue drinking from the poisoned well that is the Republican party. And all of that so that gays can't get married? Really? No kidding? Is that what worries folks when they lay down at night? Seriously?
Spare me the speeches about religion, abortion, guns and gays. Those are all issues that are dusted off every 4 years by the conservatives and will never be settled or agreed upon in our lifetime. However, the economy, gas prices, mortgage crisis and the wars are urgent issues that are at our front door now and can be turned around by our votes, so let's please stay focused here and not behave like a "nation of whiners."

Jack Torrance sounds like a real smart man.I agree with him 100%.I,too,am sick of welfare people that live in a better home,drive a better car and eat better than I do,not to mention being able to buy all the things that I can't afford.I'm one of those people paying for what you have.I'd like to retire one day,but if I have to keep supporting all the lowlife bums out there,I'll never be able to retire.Welfare should be for disabled people only.I also get tired of paying for all the illigitimate babies.My children got married,then had their families.What's wrong with this picture?!?!?

Barring any major physical infirmity or mental handicapped, those in poverty can start doing a little something for themselves. There is no reason to be able bodied and in poverty in this country.

These are precisely the deadbeats who sat in school and did not take advantage of a free public education and whose kids are likely sitting in classrooms doing nothing to prepare themselves for the real world.

I have worked two or three McJobs (at the same time) with a college degree to make it until something in my field opened up. People today call them burgerflippers---I called it opportunity. Barring any major physical infirmity or mental handicapped, there is no such thing as poverty IN THIS COUNTRY---just lazy.

Case in point, I was in line at the grocery store while a woman pulled out one of those food stamp cards---all the while she was talking on her cell phone, displaying her ornately adorned newly manicured nails--all the while buying expensive junk food with no nutritional value. Then she went out and got into a car much nicer than the one I am driving.

Face it, even the poorest among us have televisions, cell phones, microwaves, DVD players, cable television, IPODS, etc.

Obama wants to tax me more and give it away to those who won't work? Call me bigotted. Call me racist. I don't give a sheeeeeeeeeeeeeet. Say what you will, but our country was much safer, more economically and educationally sound in the 1950's----when there was less tolerance of immorality, less racial strife, and homes were for families to sit around and have dinner together and watch good wholesome family shows.

Obama is what is wrong with American today. Everyone wants to LOOK good and put on a good show, but they are not willing to put in the sweat equity to have the substance necessary to run a country. It reminds me of a quote from "White Men Can't Jump"---"A black man would rather look good and lose than look bad and win."

That quote not only applies to blacks, it applies to the younger generation.

Revolutionary----call McCain McKKKain all you want. That does not make it so. McCain is a true war hero who as repeatedly gone against the Bush Administration and the Republican party. Even if he HAD agreed with Bush 100% of the time AT LEAST HE SHOWED UP TO VOTE YEAH OR NAY. 126 times OBAMA voted PRESENT because he did not want to take a stand.

Again if you want our country to continue killing unborn children, vote for Obama. If you want our country to allow queers to marry queers---vote for Obama. If you what white people to pay reparations for slavery vote for Obama. If you want sex education taught to kindergartners---vote for Obama.

Obama is not right for the United States. He will sink the US further into immorality and degregation.

Celebrity endorsements mean absolutely nothing to this voter. Opinions are like noses. Everyone has one. I could drop down to Cape and spout off about my favorite candidate and I would hope no one listened to me. My decision will be made on an analysis of the candidate and then confirmation of that decision the way scriptures say: through prayer and fasting.

Mrs.Palin is no Hillary Clinton,this is for all those men/women that are jumping on this bandwagon for the opposition to continue to use the war and 26years experience to scare real america. She has done somethings in her life the average person couldn't. This doesn't mean shes ready..we all know shes not. Great stratagy though,but she's just a pawn. I don't know how else to say this but...ALASKA???? Of course it's a state,but it's 3lightyears away from America right! Do they even have crime there? Hello everyone...theres some good opinions and some that are way off. Obama is a black man,his father is a black man..its not that he doesn't credit his white side,its that american life deems anyone with african blood simply black here. Im not with either party,i've grown up here in cape girardeau where nothing changes but more banks,churches,and fast food huts. Its almost funny that such a republican town can do nothing about its poverty,lost, and abandoned sons and daughters of this city. Im currently in school and still serving in the military,yet the very people in this area treat you less of a man,black,white,yellow,if you don't buy into the norm here. Lets not worry about Mrs,Judd,she doesn't know these parts,or Obama,or McKKKain,but honestly,folks,change is absolute,i can remember back when they used to say the revolution wouldn't be televised,well it is today.Its ashame that if he was john mckkkain the garbage man,in his old age,he would not get a second look at any job interview,you would think that a president would need to use the computer,and things of that nature,???Wouldnt you.

Obama refuses to acknowledge who he is: He is 50% white which he refuses to acknowledge. The other half is mostly Arab and a small part black from a grandmother in Kenya. You combine that with his relationships with Rev. Wright, the radical priest, the radical terrorst, and the convicted Resco: You quickly see what you are buying.

You look at his tax plan and if you work for a living, you will fast see how much more of your money he wants to take. He says he will cut income taxes on 95% of all wage earners. Since the bottom 40% currently pay no income tax, that can only mean he will increase the amount of income tax credits for those folks at the expense of those that actually pay income tax. Ther are many more issues including capital gains taxes and other tax increases you will pay. A sheep in wolfe's clothing--YOU BET.

Nothing cracks me up more that to see Republicans scream about Hollywood speaking about politics when THEY are the ones who always elect them when they are on the Republican side....Sonny Bono, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Fred Thompson, etc....and for God's sake, don't forget the patron saint, Ronald Reagan.
I promise you that if Ashley Judd would have been a Republican actress, the conservatives would've said she was doing God's work.

What qualifies Ashley Judd to discuss economics? Absolutely nothing, of course. But we're not supposed to realize that because we're small-town hillbillies in the presence of a celebrity, and Ashley's from Kentucky so she obviously speaks our lingo. I wonder how Ashley's position on abortion might be different if her mother, who had a child while single, had exercised that option?

JackTorrance - I'm voting for McCain, however, you tirade just about lost my vote. Being a Republican, I thought, also meant allowing people freedom from the Federal Government and the increase in state's rights. So, while I'm not wearing buttons advocating same-sex marriage, if a state decides that is what the people want, well, welcome to the concept of state's rights (at least that is how I understood it when President Reagan was promoting it).

Again, I am a McCain supporter, but I'd still like to know just how do you know Obama "hates Christians and (sic) loves queers"? Someone that concerned with a person sexual preference may be hiding something <wink>

When you start a paragraph "White people", you are clearly nothing more than a Klan member or at the least a poser. The GOP helped end slavery, help end seperate but equal (but not quickly enough) with Brown v. the Board of Education after a Republican put Earl Warren on the supreme Court. Do you really want to bag on the President that help plan Operation Overlord when he was General Eisenhower? Ask you Grand Master if that would be okay.

Perhaps Michelle Obama wouldn't have a chip on her shoulder if she didn't have to deal with people like you.

Obama and his supporters have held two Cape events which were closed to the public. How is a man who is advocating change "for the people" be taken seriously if he will not meet WITH the people.

If you want this country to continue killing unborn babies vote for Obama. If you want this country to allow queers to marry, vote for Obama. If you want more of your hard earned money to to be taken from you, vote for Obama. If you want someone who embaraces "my Muslim er, I men, Christian faith." vote for Obama. If you want someone in the White House who hates Christians amd loves queers, vote for Obama.

White people, if you want to have to pay reparations for slavery (money for an injustice) to all the Negroes in this country, vote for Obama. If you want a man who wasn't even smart enough to name Hillary as his vice Presidential candidate (virtually assuring the Democrats of a November win), vote for Obama.


And the biggest reason NOT to vote for Obama, is that with Obama you get a black woman with a chip on her shoulder (Michelle)---With McCain you get two hotties with killer bodies! No contest.

If Obama wins this election, sagging will be in style, the White House will be refered to as "Da Crib," and Lil Wayne will play at the Inaugural Ball.
