Aye Carumba! Winter Storm "Bart" is a troublemaker
I was expecting today's weather system, dubbed Winter Storm Bart, to be a real underachiever. No, instead we get a real troublemaker.
The earlier forecasts suggested that the precipitation this morning wouldn't reach the ground until later in the day, while temperatures creeped toward and then above freezing. When I peeked outside at 6:30 AM, it was clear that the rain had not only reached the ground, but already covered it in a snot-slick glaze.
Oops! At least from my vantage point in rural northern Cape Girardeau County, road conditions have been perilous all morning. The latest reports from the National Weather Service show serious problems as far south as Western Kentucky. Officially, we're only under a Freezing Rain Advistory, but I would prefer to upgrade this to a "Don't Have A Cow, But Things Outside Are Really Ugly Warning."
Thankfully, temperatures are slowing rising, with the latest observation at the Cape Airport a balmy 30°F. Once we surpass the freezing mark, this icy mess will quickly go away. Then we can worry about the chance for thunderstorms tonight...
