Stores team up for relief effort, donations

Local Wal-Mart and Sam's Clubs have teamed up with the Salvation Army to collect monetary donations for ongoing relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The Salvation Army is not collecting material goods at this time and will be involved for the long term relief efforts. Checks should be earmarked 'disaster relief' and can be made at Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, The Salvation Army, 701 Good Hope, (P.O. Box 802) Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63703. Cape Public Library holds card sign-up month

The Cape Girardeau Public Library would like to clarify that a library card is free to those in the Cape Girardeau Public Library district. There is a yearly charge for out-of-district patron library cards.

Labor Day Festival to be held at Horseshoe Lake

A Labor Day Festival will be held at Horeshoe Lake on Monday. Festivities begin at 6:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast; 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. gospel singers will provide music under the pavilion; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. barbeque; 1 to 4 p.m. bluegrass music by Old Santa Fe; 4 p.m. raffle drawing, need not be present to win. American Legion sponsors youth gun safety program

National Rifle Association certified instructor Leon Dickerson will offer gun safety classes from 7 to 9 p.m. every first and third Tuesday of the month at the American Legion Post 63, at 2731 Thomas Drive, Cape Girardeau. The next class dates are Sept. 6 and 20. The class is sponsored by the American Legion and is free for 12- to 18-year-olds. The program, held indoors throughout the school year, will begin with air guns and progress to rifles. Progress of participants will be measured and recorded. Jackson Uptown Historic District committee meets

The Jackson Uptown Historic District was approved by the State of Missouri to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The nomination is now being reviewed by the National Park Service for their approval which is anticipated to be received in 60 days. The Historic District Committee will meet at 5:15 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month beginning Sept. 8 in the Chamber Conference Room. Republican Women's Club features Judge Syler

The Cape Girardeau County Republican Women's Club will be holding a luncheon beginning at 11:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9 at Dexter Bar-B-Q in Cape Girardeau. Harley-Davidson raffle to benefit children's center

Minor's Harley-Davidson and the Kenny Rogers Children's Center have teamed up to raffle a special, limited-edition motorcycle, the 2005 Fat Boy. Tickets are available by calling the KRCC at 472-0397 or Minor's Harley-Davidson at 334-7716. Drawing will be held Sept. 10 at the statewide H.O.G. rally in Cape Girardeau. Ticket sales are limited. All proceeds benefit KRCC and stay here in Southeast Missouri to make a difference in the lives of children with special needs.

Smelterville/May Green School to hold reunion

A reunion for all former residents of Smelterville and students, teachers and principals of May Greene School will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at the May Greene School. Community Contra dance to be held Sept. 10

52 in attendance at the Friedrich reunion

The Friedrich reunion was held at Delmonico's in Jackson Aug. 21. Food and fellowship were enjoyed by 52 in attendance from Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Oak Ridge, Leopold and surrounding Missouri communities. Fred Nebel of Cape Girardeau, age 90, was honored as the oldest in attendance; Ashley Hillis of Tulin, Mo., age 7 months, was honored as the youngest in attendance; Paul and Maxine Friedrich of Jackson were honored as the biggest family with six children; traveling the furthest was Cherry Hinderberger of Columbia, Mo. Entertainment was provided by Hinderberger and Dennis Mayfield. Next year the reunion will be held Aug. 22 at Delmonicos.
