JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A Fulton woman is accused of injecting a chemical into her husband's IV bag while he lay in his hospital bed recovering from surgery.

Millie R. Edwards, 35, was charged Thursday with first-degree assault hours after a duty nurse at a Jefferson City hospital discovered around 1:30 a.m. that someone had tampered with the man's IV bag.

"Her husband was in the hospital for elective surgery," Jefferson City Police Capt. Mike Smith said. "They had been married for 18 years and we understand they had been having some family issues recently."

Police say after she was arrested, Edwards admitted injecting "Oops! All-Purpose Remover" into her husband's IV solution. According to court documents, she hoped it would trigger a heart attack.

"The suspect was in the room when the nurse noticed something was wrong," Smith said. "We are still looking into what may have motivated her to do this."

Medical personnel provided emergency treatment after the man started showing symptoms that were unrelated to the condition for which he was hospitalized.

Officials said the man is expected to survive.
