ND swimmers post two top-3 finishes

The Notre Dame girls swimming team finished third among 11 teams Saturday at the Ladue Invitational, following up the Bulldogs' second-place finish Friday among five teams at the University City Relays.

At Ladue, Notre Dame scored 276 points to finish behind Lindbergh's 526 and Ladue's 317.

"I was very pleased with that," Notre Dame coach Lenny Kuper said.

Brittany Menz had a first-place finish in the 100 individual medley for the Bulldogs' lone first-place Saturday. She won in 1 minutes, 5.51 seconds. She also made a state cut in the 100 freestyle (56.56) while swimming the lead leg for the 400 free relay that placed second and made a state cut with a 4:02.52.

Menz also was second in the 100 butterfly.

Lauren Castleman added a second in the 200 free.

Castleman had a state cut in the 100 free at the University City Relays. She also swam the lead leg on the 400 free relay. Her time of 57.74 put the team on its way to a first-place finish in 4:09.56.

Rachel Henson, Abigail Messmer and Ashley Nenninger were the other members of the relay squad.

Notre Dame scored 134 points to finish behind Wentzville Timberland's 158.

Marquette Relays

Central finished ninth in the nine-team event.

Parkway South won the event with 288 points. Central, competing without all-state senior Hannah Kinder, finished with 112 points.

Jessie Baker, Annie Wolpers and Mary Catherine Ford combined for three of Central's top performances. The trio finished eighth in the 600 inidividual medley relay, fifth in the backstroke relay and combined with Kelly Ennis to finish sixth in the 400 medley relay.

Brittney Thomas and Tara Volkerding also finished fifth in the diving relay.

The Tigers lost in a makeup consolation semifinal game in the Farmington Invitational.

Dexter, which is hosting more games Tuesday and Wednesday to complete the bracket, built a 15-5 lead after one period.

Wendi Zickfield led Central (0-3) with nine points, while Courtney Schuessler added eight.

Ava Johnson scored 20 points to lead the Pirates to a home win. Johnson was the fourth different leading scorer for Perryville (2-2). Alyssa Bauwens added 15 points, Kendra Schilli had 14 and Alicia Kueker had 10 for Perryville.
