Late comeback leads to 6-5 victory over Springfield.

For most of Friday night's game, it looked like the Plaza Tire Capahas would fall into the loser's bracket of the National Baseball Congress Mid-South Regional.

But a late comeback allowed the host Capahas to escape with a thrilling 6-5, 10-inning victory over the Springfield (Mo.) Generals.

And it allowed Plaza Tire to avoid dipping into the loser's bracket after just one tournament contest.

"We really needed to win this game," said Dustin Pritchett, who drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. "Otherwise we would have been looking at having to win four straight over the next two days."

Instead, the Capahas need just one win both today and Sunday in order to capture their third straight Mid-South Regional title.

The Capahas (21-5) play the Charleston Riverdogs at 4 p.m. today in the winner's bracket final of the four-team event. The victor earns a berth in Sunday's championship

Also today, the Generals take on the Pine Bluff (Ark.) Braves at 1 p.m. in an elimination contest, followed by another elimination game at 7:30 p.m.

"Springfield has a really good team and I give them a lot of credit," Plaza Tire manager Jess Bolen said. "But I'm really proud of my guys. What a ballgame."

Things did not look good for the Capahas most of the way as they fell behind 4-0 in the third inning, when starting pitcher Phillip Riley was knocked from the game after taking a line drive off his pitching elbow.

"Phillip was throwing really well," Bolen said.

Jamie McAlister, after a shaky start upon replacing Riley, ended up giving the Capahas brilliant relief work as he went the rest of the way.

Still, the Capahas continued to trail the entire night until scoring two runs -- on just one hit -- in the ninth to forge a 5-5 tie.

The Capahas then capitalized on two Springfield errors to score an unearned run in the 10th. They had three unearned runs as the Generals made four errors.

"Sometimes you have to be a little lucky," said Zach Johnson, whose bases-loaded single with two outs in the ninth pulled the Capahas into a 5-5 tie and forced extra frames.

Johnson had been hitless -- along with a walk -- in four previous plate appearances before bouncing a single up the middle in the ninth.

"It was a seeing-eye hit," said a smiling Johnson. "But it felt good to contribute."

In a wild 10th, Jordan Payne reached on a one-out infield single and moved to second on a throwing error.

Asif Shah was intentionally walked, then Daryl Graham's routine pop fly was dropped by shortstop Chris Hampton for an error that loaded the bases.

Chad Mercado then appeared to pull his bat back on a suicide squeeze attempt as Payne was caught off third in a rundown.

Mercado wound up being hit by a pitch to again load the bases. Pritchett then drilled the first pitch down the third-base line to bring home Shah with the game-ending run.

Riley allowed three hits and struck out seven in 3 1/3 innings, but he was charged with three of the runs during Springfield's four-run fourth that featured just two hits, along with three walks and a hit batter.

McAlister walked one, hit one and allowed a two-run single upon entering the contest. One of the runs was charged to him.

But McAlister allowed just one run the rest of the way. In 6 2/3 innings, he gave up five hits while striking out nine, walking two and hitting two as he notched the victory.

Springfield starter Blake Wixson had a one-hit shutout through five innings and wound up allowing just one run and three hits in six innings.

Four relievers followed Wixson to the mound.

The Capahas had nine hits. They also received 10 walks and three hit batters, along with the four errors.

Levi Olson had three hits, including a home run, to lead the Capahas. He drove in two runs. Pritchett and Payne both added two hits.

Capahas 6, Generals 5, 10 innings

Hopefully the Riverdogs can shake off the curse and send the Capahas into the loser's bracket. The Riverdogs are Cape's blue collar team----David vs. Goliath---- Go Riverdogs

same [BS] from a Jess Bolen team. Can't play with better teams so he brings in umps who call it one sided.....and guess what happens.....Capahas win.

obviously rda160 has no idea what he is talking about. just because every call was argued by the other team doesn't mean that they were good arguments. Secondly, if you knew the umps, you would know that they do not favor anyone in the games we have had them this year. There have been our share of arguments to them as well. But that is baseball. As for a "Jess Bolen team" ,as you call it, if you knew or played for him you would know that comment has no bearing on the outcome of the game besides his history of 1298 wins.

Pretty strong words from a manager, at first I assumed rda160 was written by a player. Rusty, in your position you are supposed to lead by example: Keep the game on the field, respect your opponents, etc. Jess Bolen is in his 41st year of coaching the Capaha's and can take the heat, but does not deserve it from a sore loser. Go out tomorrow and play a good game, win or lose, have fun and please don't blame the umpires!

It just makes you look bad. You have a good team and you're better than that.

rda160,

All I want to know is if you like apples?

You come on here blaming your teams inability to finish a game on Jess Bolen and the umpires. Maybe you should look at your team and your coaches who like to place blame on someone other than themselves. You came out today and showed how superior your team is by getting hammered by Pine Bluff.

How do you like them apples??

JaysFan: Aren't the Riverdogs from Charleston? How are they Cape's "Blue Collar" team?

Are they the "Charleston River Dogs of Cape Girardeau?"

FYI....guess what ump happened to have shown up in the field on Sat. vs Pine Bluff. The same who on Fri night called a pitch down the middle of the plate a ball and then warned the pitcher for asking where the pitch was? I've said much worst to an ump and don't had anything said. That's bush and that guy was a joke, its not my fault you can't (or choose not) to see that.

You know to everyone on here, in fairness, you are right. Not all Bolens wins are like they are now. I'm sure most were against good teams. And I know he has had some very good teams in the past. Having done this for 7 years, I have to also give him his dues for hanging in there for that long. But make no mistake, I don't respect the guy. How can I when even today he wants to accuse me of something that I had nothing to do with. And just to clarify, the team you beat was the mostly freshman team and yes the closer is wild but there were in fact MANY other missed calls that cost runs that would have put the game out of reach heading into the 9th inning. Even if it wasn't done to the favor of one team, that umpire was horrible and you can tell him that he better not ever ump a game with me coaching, cuz what Hughes said isn't even a fraction of the earfull of what I would give him.

I'm just glad I didn't waste my time sending our older team out there....the same one who has run ruled Pine Bluff the past two times we played them...

I like what Josh wrote about apples.

Randy... I'll bet you never thought your boys would have the tar beaten out of them by Pine Bluff. That's what you get for not respecting your opponents. It was easy to see even before the game started that the Springfield team was comprised of young talented arrogant punks... but we still respected them. The starting pitcher for example... weeping about calls in the 1st inning. Way to coach em up coach. That's good baseball.

Ok so since the subject of respecting people came up here, what ever happened to players not talking trash to coaches? And vise verse. If you will notice nothing was said here about the Cape players, just the coach and umpires. If you don't like it too bad. But you know what since you opened the door, at least I'll know your number for Wichita.......

And yes you are right those players are talent and arrogant, but then again they come from college programs where there are lots of quality players and that's what it takes to be successful. I'm sure you wouldn't understand that having gone to SEMO.
