Number of cases of flu-like illnesses reported last week in Southeast Missouri increased dramatically over previous week, but health officials say figure is still not unusual for first week of November; no confirmed cases of influenza have been reported in area.

If Casino Magic requests it, Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority is willing to ask Scott County Commission to give voters another chance to decide on whether to allow riverboat gambling in county; Scott County voters turned down gaming by margin of 745 votes; Casino Magic has signed option to lease about 25 acres at port for river gambling development.

Trinity Lutheran Church conducts its annual Loyalty Sunday Worship Service in Arena Building, the one service taking place of four services usually held on normal weekend at Trinity Lutheran School; service provides opportunity for Trinity Family to gather for one massive worship service as it considers work set before it for coming year.

Timetable for construction of new library building envisions spring start and completion in December 1979; specific plans are unveiled for 18,900-square-foot facility that will be constructed on land at Clark and Woodlawn.

Apparently wanting to get their money's worth, Girardeans have accumulated considerable backlog of trash that has served to slow first week's run of new garbage and trash collection service; William C. O'Donnell Jr., office manager for M.H. Hoffmeister, city contractor for program, says it appears most people have been saving quite a bit of trash for several weeks in anticipation of start of service.

Lacy's Gulf Service Station, on Independence, will hold formal opening Saturday, with television set and other articles to be given away; Don Lacy is operator of station.

75 years ago: Nov. 5, 1928

Since traffic bridge across Mississippi River opened on Sept. 12, total of $11,232.75 in tolls had been collected up to Nov. 1, according to statement issued by Cape Girardeau Bridge Co.; of this amount, $6,099.35 was collected during October.

Voters of Cape Girardeau County will go to polls tomorrow to ballot on candidates for president, U.S. senator and congressman, and state officers and to elect number of county officials to serve two- and four-year terms; indications point to record voter turnout.
