Gross to step aside as Jackson football coachSaturday, January 26, 2008
The letter from Gross, who has led the Indians football team for 19 years, was given to the school board, but has not yet been accepted, Jackson assistant superintendent James Welker confirmed Friday. Gross did not return phone messages left for him Friday. "He has retired from all those," Welker said about the three positions Gross held. "The letter of retirement or resignation or whatever you want to call it, still has to be approved by the board." Welker said he believes there will be a board retreat Feb. 2, but he does not know if the board will accept Gross' resignation at that time. "I'm not sure that's when they will consider it or if it will be the next regular scheduled meeting, which I believe is the second Tuesday in February," Welker said. Welker said he would not comment more than confirming Gross' desire to leave the program and school. Gross posted a 137-69 record in his 19 seasons at the helm of the football team. He won eight district titles with the Indians, in 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2007. This past fall, Gross led the Indians to a district title, a SEMO North Conference title and a perfect regular season (10-0), including district wins over strong Class 5 teams Eureka and Parkway West. Both those schools had earned playoff appearances in the past two years. Gross then led Jackson to a 24-7 win over McCluer North in the sectional round of the playoffs. The Indians' season ended the next week with a 25-14 loss to Waynesville in the Class 5 state semifinals. Waynesville went on to win the Class 5 championship. Gross was named the SEMO North Conference coach of the year for 2007. He was also the Class 4-5 all-region coach of the year for 2007. Gross, a 1971 Central graduate, played college football at Southeast Missouri State in the 1970s and has been known for focusing his Indians offenses around the running game, posted six winning seasons and two losing seasons this decade. The Jackson football team will lose its entire 2007 offensive line to graduation, including first-team all-state guard Brian Hill and tight end Antonio Garritano, who verbally committed to play football at Southeast Missouri State next year. However, the Indians will return five defensive starters and many of their skill players, including quarterback Marcus Harris and Southeast Missourian Player of the Year and first team all-state running back Adam Zweigart, who carried the ball 215 times for 1,751 yards. Gross going to Cape Central? After Weber built the Jackson program & handed it to Gross, he went back to the school he played (Poplar Bluff) to build them up from the ashes. Maybe Gross is wanting to do the same thing & build a program for himself at his hometown school.
Should be interesting.
I just hope that they dont try and bring someone in that is not a Jackson guy. That would be the biggest mistake ever
No no no no no no. Retreads not welcome at Central. We want totally new blood.
Gross going to Cape? Why not? Cape needs A LOT of help to rebuild from what they once had. And you can only do so much with what you have now.
THANKS COACH FOR ALL THOSE GREAT YEARS! NOW JACKSON SCHOOL BOARD WE NEED A GUY WHO WAS A JACKSON GRADUATE, WHO PLAYED FOOTBALL, AND SOMEONE WHO LOVES THE GAME. SO IM THIKING EITHER BRANDON OR NATHAN NORMAN WILL DO JUST FINE. SURE THERE ARE OTHER COACHES THAT HAVE BEEN THERE LONGER THAN THEM, BUT TH LOVE WHAT THEY DO, WERE SUCCESSFUL FOOTBALL PLAYERS IN HIGHSCHOOL AND COLLEGE AND THE KIDS WOULD DO FINE WITH THEM IN REINS.
I hope Coach Brookins goes to Jackson ;)
The Gross era at Jackson will certainly be remembered as the best football years ever for Jackson - two undefeated seasons and a few runs at the state championship. He will be forever remembered by those who played for him and those whom he pushed to achieve more than football. Best of luck, Coach.
I have heard Jackson fans say that they need a coach that believes in throwing the ball more.......how about we give you Brookins and Williams, who could run your baseball program as well, and see if you guys would be happy with what they did for Central's program. The Jackson football program is successful because the community buys into it. Something you should be proud of.
Gross isn't coming to Cape. Get real. Our school district is having too many problems right now. It's an embarassment, and it doesn't have anything to do with football, so get off Brookin's back. They are both good guys and I wish them both luck and continued success! It will be interesting next season locally for football though. First, it was Perryville's coach, then Cape's, now Jackson's.
Jackson would never ever ever ever bring any coach from cape over. Are you kidding me. That would be a joke. No one deserves to coach at Jackson except a Jackson guy. Brandon Norman doesnt want the job so there is no need to bring his name up. Nathan is next in line, but it is a big responsibility and I dont know if he is ready or not.
Then you say that Jackson needs a spread offense. B.S., Jackson is good every year and they do nothing but run the ball. Some people have no clue what is going on.

yeah, um.... a losing football team has nothing to do with coaching... nice one

Does JHS still have a wall with all the weight lifting records somewhere? I know it used to be in the weight room under the stands at the stadium but, I am sure it's been moved and updated. If anyone has access could they tell me if Mike Reynolds name is still there. Class of 85'.
