Grecian Steakhouse, a family-owned steakhouse with welcoming atmosphere, has been a part of Cape Girardeau's dining culture since 1981.

Greek-born Nick Sakarelos came to Missouri to chase the American dream of owning a restaurant and making a living. Sakarelos now has 30 years of restaurant experience.

Grecian Steakhouse is something of a local chain. Sakarelos' first steakhouse was in Sikeston, Mo. Now there are several Grecian Steakhouses spread across the area. All the restaurants are owned by someone from Greece, and they are all related in some way.

"We specialize in steaks, and we want to have consistently fresh food," Sakarelos said.

The restaurant doesn't have Greek architecture or colors, but the management and menu scream Greece. One of the specialty items on the menu is a gyro — a Greek sandwich that is a combination of lamb and beef. The hot food bar offers at least three types of meat and a variety of American favorites, too.

Like most established businesses, Sakarelos sees many familiar faces.

"I see lots of people. Some of my customers I see every day," Sakarelos said.

Two of his faithful customers are Joe Childress and Demetrius Karathanos. Both men dine there several times a week.

"The food is terrific, and the service is great," Childress said.

Karathanos, who has a long friendship with Sakarelos, sees an added bonus in dining at Grecian.

"I get an opportunity to practice my native language," Karathanos said.

The restaurant offers carry-out service and banquet rooms are also available for customer use.

Grecian Steakhouse is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
