Saxony, Chaffee reach semis of tourney

Saxony Lutheran right-hander Chris Roth tossed a complete game, striking out nine, to beat Oran 5-1 in the first round of the Chaffee baseball tournament on Friday.

The game was played at Oran High School. This is the second time the Crusaders (11-1) have beaten the Eagles (6-5) on the road this week.

Roth, who improved to 5-0 on the mound, gave up five hits. He also stroked two doubles as the Crusaders connected for nine hits.

Bryant Steffens had two hits and two RBIs, while Chad Bachmann added two hits for the victors.

Dillon Glastetter and Jake Carter each had two hits for Oran (6-5).

Saxony will play in a semifinal at 11:45 a.m. today at Chaffee. It will face Shawnee, Ill., which defeated Senath-Hornersville 1-0 in eight innings.

The other semifinal today will feature host Chaffee (6-4) against Dexter (10-3) at 9:30 a.m.

Chaffee's Trenton Horman struck out 11 in five innings to lead the Red Devils to a 13-7 victory against Egyptian in a first-round game Friday.

Horman also drilled a triple. It was one of Chaffee's six hits.

Alex Crowe went 2-for-4 as the Red Devils built a 7-1 lead after two innings and never trailed.

Dexter reached the semifinals by routing Perryviile 10-0 in five innings.

Dexter pitcher Ben Mills limited Perryville to two hits. Junior Ethan Reiss picked up both hits for the Pirates.

Delta's Chase Crowden, Cody Naramore and Joe Kinder had two hits apiece as the Bobcats (3-6) banged out 13 hits in a home victory.

Shelby Kight earned his first win on the mound, pitching the final three innings.

Woodland had nine hits, including three home runs. Neil Johnson launched two of the homers while Hayden Mayfield had the other. Johnson finished with three hits, while Mayfield had two hits.

Delta overcame an early deficit by scoring nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined.

Nikki Rozmirsky hit a home run.
