SIKESTON, Mo. -- Former Missouri governor Warren E. Hearnes announces he will file for judge of the 33rd Judicial Circuit; the Charleston Democrat declines to confirm that Gov. Joseph P. Teasdale will appoint him to the post from which former judge Lloyd G. Briggs has been ousted pending appeal.

Cape Girardeau County health officials are urging area residents to have their pets vaccinated against rabies as the result of a rabid animal, which was found near Gordonville last week.

50 years ago: March 25, 1955

The annual district high school dramatics festival opens in the afternoon with the presentation of five plays at Academic Hall; nine other schools will present their one-act plays throughout the day tomorrow; 14 schools are participating in the festival.

With the matter of property assessments on which tax collections will be made this fall not yet settled, numerous district school boards will ask voters April 5 to approve school tax levies the same or much the same as last year; boards are telling voters that, should the proposed assessment increases go into effect, they will reduce the school levies so that taxes amount to the same as before.

75 years ago: March 25, 1930

Following close on the heels of a severe electrical storm last night, winter comes back to Cape Girardeau today just after spring had officially made its debut; a driving snowstorm, which reaches almost blizzard proportions, is accompanied by a drop in temperature that sends the mercury down to the freezing mark.

City counselor Rush H. Limbaugh advises the city clerk that he has no authority to add to the municipal election ballot next Tuesday the names of any other candidates other than those who won in the primary; the ruling follows the withdrawal of Henry J. Brinkopf from the city council race.

100 years ago: March 25, 1905

Beginning Monday morning, the Houck trains will carry the mail to Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Oak Ridge; this arrangement will give these towns two mail deliveries daily, and it will be possible for Girardeans to send letters to these towns and receive an answer the same day.

J.O. Livesay, who until a few weeks ago was claim agent for the Frisco and lived in Cape Girardeau with his family, was injured in a wreck near Paris, Texas, yesterday; his right arm and knee were sprained in the mishap.
