Guest organ recital on tap at Old St. Vincent's

The Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University will present a guest organ recital at 3 p.m. April 2 in Old St. Vincent's Church. The guest soloist will be Dr. Lynn Trapp, director of music at St. Olaf Catholic Church in St. Louis. This concert is co-sponsored by the Southern Illinois Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

New faculty member to play trombone recital

Robert Conger will present a faculty trombone recital in conjunction with the Southeast Faculty Brass Quintet Thursday at Southeast Missouri State University. The concert will be held at 8 p.m. in Brandt Hall room 205. The concert is free and open to the public. Conger is a new member of the music faculty and is responsible for all low brass applied music lessons as well as directing the jazz program, the Redhawk Concert Band and teaching courses in conducting and music education. 'Human Jukebox' will entertain at Southeast

Singer John Rush, billed as "The Human Jukebox," will perform at the University Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University Thursday at 6 p.m. A hallmark of Rush's show is passing a list of more than 500 songs around the audience and taking requests to play songs from the list. Rush also incorporates a variety of his original songs into the set. The concert is open to the public and free of charge.

Kelly High School presents 'Just Ducky'

BENTON, Mo. -- The Kelly High School Drama Club will present its annual spring play Thursday and April 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kelly High School gymnasium. The production is "Just Ducky," a three-act comedy by Donal Payton. Tickets are only available at the door. The play is suitable for all ages and is directed by Becky Huntsman. Heartland Writers Guild prepares for workshop

The Heartland Writers Guild will present a workshop titled "Writing Family and Community Stories" on June 4 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. The workshop will include speeches and presentations by area writers and will include a critique session. Registration is required and the fee includes continental breakfast and lunch buffet. Manuscripts must be no more than 10 double-spaced, typed pages and a reading fee must accompany any submission. For more information, visit www.heartlandwriters.org.

Local artist's work included in state collection

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Local artist Dodie Eisenhauer, from Daisy, Mo., was recently honored to be among the Best of Missouri Hands artists invited to a dedication ceremony at the Missouri Governor's Mansion unveiling a walnut display case with handmade Christmas ornaments from the mansion's past three Christmas trees. The cabinet, built by Lou Swacker and designed by Heinrich and Aimee Leonard, was designed to resemble the mansion and hangs on its first floor back sun porch with 93 ornaments. Eisenhauer, who is known for her wire mesh angels, has provided the tree topper the past three years. The piece chosen for display was her tree topper from 2004 with the Lewis and Clark theme featuring Sacagawea. It has been placed on the top of the cabinet.

Student art show coming up at Southeast

The Department of Art at Southeast Missouri State University will open its Annual Student Juried Assessment April 1 in the Southeast Missouri Regional Museum at the university. An opening reception for the artists is planned for 4 to 6 p.m. April 1 in the museum, with awards presented to the artists. The reception is open to the public. The exhibition will showcase works created by Southeast art students in their classes during the past year. A guest juror will select 30 to 40 works from more than 300 painting, sculpture, drawing, fine craft, graphic design, print and illustration entries. First Friday openings slated for April 1

In April, the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will present the artwork of Erin Robert in the Lorimier Gallery and the paintings of Sue Burton Cole in Gallery 100, along with a new exhibit by the Visual Arts Cooperative in the Jean A. Chapman Gallery. Robert's work is described as abstracts with figurative and dreamlike qualities, incorporating collages, charcoal, pen and ink, oil, and gouache. Cole's paintings are landscapes using "more intense color than nature intended," primarily in watercolors. There will be an opening reception for the artists April 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the galleries.
