Perry County voters showed their disapproval for a $2.4 million bond issue for the Altenburg School District at the polls Tuesday, ultimately saying no to the development of a new elementary school.

Unofficial results from the county clerk's office indicate 56 percent of voters said no to the tax increase, while 44 percent approved of the initiative.

If passed, the proposition would have increased the district's property tax levy 83 cents per $100 assessed valuation.

"I think we did everything we could have done to pass it," said Altenburg School District superintendent Bleau Deckerd. "There's nothing I would have done differently."

About 115 students, kindergarten through eighth grade, attend classes in four different school buildings. The bond issue was proposed to develop a new elementary school that would house all the students under one roof.

"The need is still going to be there," Deckerd said. "We're going to have to look at our current facilities and see if there's anything we need to address immediately."
