13 Cape students win at Region Math Competition, 5 qualify for State

Two sixth-graders and two fourth and fifth-graders from Cape Public Schools will be going to the Missouri State Math Competition at Springfield next month, having won first and second-place in the concepts category, and third in the problem-solving category. Another ten students ranked in the top ten.

Riley Knight and Samartha Shresthra, both sixth-graders at Central Middle School, won first and second-place, respectively, in the Concepts category. Carson Retter, a fourth-grader at Clippard Elementary, Samartha Shrestha and Mike Morrison, a fifth-grader at CMS, each earned third-place ribbons in the problem-solving category. All will be going to state competition May 1 at Missouri State University.

In addition, the CMS fifth-grade team won second-place at the competition, while the CMS sixth-grade team took third-place.

Other winners from Cape schools are: Concepts Test: fourth-place, Mike Morrison, CMS; fifth-place, Carson Retter, Clippard Elementary; sixth-place, Katie Kinder, CMS; seventh-place, Hannah Jackson, Clippard, and Gabby Viera, CMS; eighth-place, Amy Dai, CMS; tenth-place, Reed Dickson, CMS.

In the Problem-Solving category, the winners are: Riley Knight, fourth-place, CMS; seventh-place, Amy Dai, CMS; eighth-place, Hannah Jackson, Clippard; Katie Kinder, CMS and Shane Wright, CMS; tenth-place, Rose Hall, Franklin Elementary.

"Beauty of Mathematics" was the theme of the 25th Annual Missouri Elementary Student Mathematics Contest sponsored by the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics. More than 2500 students in grades four, five and six participated. Dr. Sydney Herbst, principal at Clippard Elementary, said, "The district's success could not be possible without the dedication and cooperation of teachers and parents such as Stacy Kinder, who has volunteered to do math club for our third and fourth-graders for several years. She has made it a fun and challenging experience for the students, and I really appreciate her time and dedication." Mark Kiehne, principal at Central Middle School, said "I am very proud and impressed with the dedication of our students and teachers Kim Newman and Stephanie Brown."
