Three longtime employees and emeritus medallion recipients from Southeast Missouri State University are honored at a faculty recognition program in the University Center; honored are John A. Behrens, director of admissions emeritus; Billie O'Neal, professor emerita of health, physical education and recreation; Louis Sewell, professor emeritus of mathematics; and Vincent E. Seyer, director of the physical plant with more than 35 years of service.

Paul W. Bock, 28, coach of the Delta High School boys varsity basketball and baseball teams, dies when fire consumes his single-level home north of Delta; he was alone in the house when the fire started.

50 years ago: April 27, 1961

Work orders were issued yesterday for the start of construction of Interstate 55 near Cape Girardeau; it is hoped by officials with R.B. Potashnick and Donald L. Harrison Construction companies that grading can begin Monday.

John C. Crites, Cape Girardeau County sheriff, has been named president of the Missouri Peace Officers Association for the ensuing year.

75 years ago: April 27, 1936

All the Cape County Baseball League needs to get underway is an additional team to make it a six-team loop, according to Herman Keller; the teams signed up to play in the league are Jungle Giants, Red Star, Keller Buddies, Gordonville and Caney Tigers.

Central High School won't be sending any of its winners in the district high school meet here last weekend to the state meet at Columbia, Mo.; principal Paul Jenkins says the school doesn't have sufficient funds to send all of the pupils entitled to the trip, which would include the 60 members of the high school band; hence, none will go.

100 years ago: April 27, 1911

CAIRO, Ill. -- Without a moment's warning, the Cairo wharf boat, one of the largest on the river, sinks in 20 feet of water in the afternoon, and destruction of the boat is feared; it is the property of Halliday and Phillips Wharfboat Co. and was built in the early 1870s at a cost of $50,000; an estimated $10,000 worth of merchandise was on board when it sank.

Construction of the new church building on the lot donated by Louis Houck to the Methodists in South Cape Girardeau is underway, the framework of the church being up.
