Cape Girardeau police received a report Thursday afternoon from the public works department that two manhole covers were stolen from an alleyway between South Hanover Street and South Henderson Avenue. Cape Girardeau police spokesman Darin Hickey said the covers were immediately replaced by the public works department. Hickey said whoever stole the covers may try to sell them as scrap metal, although it was unlikely because if the covers did show up at a recycling facility, certain identifiers would likely cause facility workers to notify police immediately. More likely, Hickey said, someone stole the covers out of mischief, to cause damage to a vehicle traveling through the area or cause injury to someone walking. He said he is not aware of any recent similar incidents.
