Perryville Fire Department officials have no cause for the fire that consumed a local business Monday night.
Perryville firefighters responded to a fire at Perryville Stave Co. just after 8 p.m. and were assisted by crews from East Perry, Biehle, Chester, North Bollinger County and St. Mary's.
Perryville Fire Chief Jeremy Triller said when firefighters arrived on the scene, about one-third of the building was "fully involved" with the possibility of spreading to the company's warehouse building. He said there were a few other warehouse-type buildings nearby but they were not damaged by the fire.
Triller said crews were on the scene for about six and a half hours and the fire was contained in about two hours.
"It was pretty routine," he said of battling the fire. "We had to lay a lot of hose to get water there, which was a big time consuming thing for us. We also had to get a tanker shuttle to bring water to the rear of the building to help efforts to battle the blaze in that area."
He said the building was a large, open wooden structure, which made it easy for the fire to spread. Fire marshals are not expected to investigate, Triller said, because there is no reason to believe "anything suspicious" caused the fire. The fire chief also said the building was "so far gone, it would be virtually impossible to pinpoint the cause."
