CHAFFEE, Mo. -- An afternoon fire in Chaffee burned down a shed, totaled a truck and damaged an electrical pole, but left a home on the same property intact. No one was injured in the blaze at 111 W. Parker Ave.
Chaffee Fire Department chief Sam Glency said a person was working on a vehicle at 2:49 p.m., when its carburetor backfired and the car engine ignited. The vehicle's owner tried to put out the fire with a small extinguisher and then a garden hose, but without much luck.
When the owner realized those methods weren't working, they called 911, Glency said.
Members of the Chaffee, Oran and Delta fire departments were able to contain the fire by about 3:15 p.m.
Glency said the wood-and-brick shed and Chevrolet truck that caught fire are total losses. An Ameren Missouri crew also was on the scene about 4 p.m. to repair the damaged electrical pole.
