A late-night fire Tuesday caused extensive damage to a house on South Hanover Street, Cape Girardeau firefighters reported.

Battalion Chief Mark Starnes of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department said no one was injured in the fire, which broke out while the house was unoccupied.

Just before 10 p.m., emergency scanner traffic indicated the house was 30 percent involved in flames, and a nearby electrical transformer was arcing, prompting firefighters to call Ameren Missouri to shut off the power.

When firefighters arrived, flames were showing on the north side of the one-and-a-half-story house at 327 S. Hanover St., according to a news release from the department.

Fire had vented from the first-floor window on the north side, and electricity had burned away from the house, the release states.

Four engines and a ladder truck responded to the scene, while the Jackson and Scott City fire departments were called to provide mutual aid for city coverage, the release states.

Scanner traffic indicated firefighters had the blaze under control in about 30 minutes.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear, and no one who worked the scene was available Wednesday afternoon to answer questions about the blaze.
