A home is a total loss after a fire Friday night in Pocahontas.

The Fruitland Area Fire Protection District responded to a fire about 7 p.m. at 649 Jackson Road, where light flames and heavy smoke were showing from a two-story home, assistant chief Gene Kerns said.

It is unclear how many residents lived in the home. Once emergency personnel were on scene, Kerns said two men were offering assistance to officers and one said the home belonged to his father. Kerns did not know whether the father lived with anyone else.

Mutual aid was requested from East and North County, Gordonville, Millersville, Jackson and Frohna-Altenburg. Some crews were necessary for extra water, and others were for more manpower.

The home eventually was engulfed in flames and was considered a total loss. Kerns did not have an official cause, but said the fire was not suspicious.

No civilians were injured but Kerns said one Fruitland firefighter sustained minor steam burns.
