ROLLA, Mo. -- Forty new troopers graduated yesterday from the Highway Patrol Academy at Rolla, including trooper Benny Hinton of Cape Girardeau; it is the first class of the 145 additional men authorized by the 1965 Legislature.

Kermit Meystedt leads the MIAA in rebounds, according to the latest figures released by the conference; Meystedt had picked off 97 in the first five games, while the nearest opponent is Dave Taylor of Kirksville, Missouri, with 67; Meystedt is second in scoring and field goals.

From far away Los Angeles, Jess Stacy, the Cape Girardeau boy in the big-time orchestra field, sends Christmas greetings to his friends back home via the Southeast Missourian newspaper; Stacy is now with Bing Crosby's orchestra, engaged in making moving pictures for Paramount.

A new Dodge fire truck, built in Cape Girardeau after the chassis was purchased at the factory, is finished and has been placed at the fire station ready for use; most of the work on the machine was done by Harry Frazier.

A local merchant who was in St. Louis earlier this week said he was told by a wholesale house that early in the new year the Cotton Belt Railroad is scheduled to enter Cape Girardeau; it is said the Cotton Belt business will include both freight and passenger service.

Magnus and Angelo Dempsey are two busy Elks in the morning, filling and dispatching about 50 baskets of food and toys to as many needy families in Cape Girardeau; not only are baskets sent out, but about 10 loads of coal are ordered sent to families needing a little fuel beyond what they pick up from the railway right of way.
