All the human residents escaped without injury, but two animals perished after being trapped upstairs during a house fire Thursday at 3946 Route Z near Gordonville.
Gordonville, Delta and Jackson Fire Departments responded to a call of smoke rising out of the upstairs vent at 12:04 p.m. Thursday.
Gordonville fire chief Randy Morris said the fire started in the back porch area, where there was a wood-burning stove.
The fire seemed to be concentrated in the western portion of the house, where there was a substantial amount of smoke an hour after the initial call.
Firefighters broke upstairs windows to enter the structure.
A rabbit and dog were found dead on the second floor.
Robert Farrar owns the house and surrounding land.
He and his wife were at work at the time of the fire.
His daughter was home, but she was able to get out.
“Terrible,” Farrar said. “This changes everything, and in the middle of the winter, too. I don’t think we’re going to be staying here tonight.”
Morris said the house likely was a total loss.
The Farrars’ son Jacob Hoover has set up a GoFundMe site for his parents at www.gofundme.com/farrarhome.
