Ah, autumn! The season of pumpkins, festivals and glorious autumnal colors! There are lots of activities coming up.
Various species of birds will be migrating south, so keep an eye out and let us know when you spot a new beak at your feeder.
While hiking, Richard and I have noticed the bounty of pawpaws this year. I am looking forward to making pawpaw bread if we can beat the animals to the fruit. We also hope Ralph Enderle's sorghum will be available this year!
Get your fill of chili and soup today at General Baptist Church from noon to 2 p.m. It is all you can eat for only $7 for adults and $4 for children 10 and older. The meal includes a beverage and dessert. The church also will participate in the citywide sale next weekend. We also remind you to get your fill of your favorite treats at the Chaffee Drive-in today! They will close for the winter following tonight's business hours.
It is that time of year for flu shots. The Scott County Health Department will be giving shots at the senior center from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Sept. 30 and will accept Medicare, Medicaid or $20. Don't risk the flu!
The citywide sale is Sept. 30 to Oct. 1. If you want to get your name and items on the map, you must do it at city hall no later than tomorrow. The cost is $5. Maps will be available Sept. 28 at city hall, Rice Insurance Agency and the Bank of Advance. Citywide cleanup is the following week on your scheduled trash day.
The Chaffee High School Alumni Banquet is at 5 p.m. Oct. 8 at the VFW Hall. Tom Davenport reports a recent count of 197 paid reservations. Visiting hours start at 5 p.m., along with book signings by Dr. Max Heeb, Mark Hopkins and Darla Buckhannon. Book prices range from $5 to $15, with proceeds benefiting the CHS Alumni Association. Dinner is at 6:15, catered by Two Chefs. On the menu is fried chicken, smoked pork loin, salad, green beans, potatoes, dessert and beverage. The Class of 1966 will receive special recognition.
RSVP/VIC Executive Director Tina Dohogne-Nations invites you to come out for redneck horseshoes at the Al Friga Farm on Saturday, Oct. 15. It is the third annual Horseshoes 4 "everyday" Heroes Tournament. A two-person team costs $25 per person or $50 per team. There will be mouse races, yardzee and cornhole, lots of barbecue, cold beer and a sound system/karaoke, plus 18 different crazy pits to play. The fire department will hold an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 22. Volunteer fireman Cody Johnson just completed a three-day training class on child passenger safety. Instruction of proper child seat fastening and car seat checks are among the planned activities. Hot dogs and chips will be served.
Dinner auction to be held
The St. Ambrose 27th annual Dinner Auction is Oct. 22 at the VFW Hall. Doors open at 5 p.m. with a silent auction. Dinner is at 6 p.m. followed by an oral auction at 7. On the menu is smoked pork loin and smoked chicken breast with all the trimmings and dessert. Tickets are $25 and available after weekend Mass or by calling Donna Themm at (573) 318-0384.
We remind you that the cemetery will be cleared in October, so it is important that you pick up any items you would like to keep no later than Oct. 15.
