A 45-year-old man walking along northbound Interstate 55 was killed Friday morning trying to flee one collision but was hit by five vehicles in the southbound lane of I-55, according to a Cape Girardeau police news release.

A 45-year-old man walking along northbound Interstate 55 was killed Friday morning trying to flee one collision but was hit by five vehicles in the southbound lane of I-55, according to a Cape Girardeau police news release.

A driver pulled over to offer the man a ride along the northbound lane of I-55 near mile marker 97, according to the release. The driver backed onto the shoulder and overturned the vehicle, according to the release.

The man ran across the highway and was struck by five vehicles in the southbound lane of I-55, according to the release. Coroner John Clifton won’t release more information about the man until his next of kin is notified, according to the release. There was no information about injuries to motorists.

The collision caused police to block both lanes of southbound I-55 until about 8 a.m. Officers also blocked one lane of northbound I-55 until about 8 a.m. until the wreckage could be cleared.
