A recreational-vehicle camper and two homes were found engulfed in flames by a passing bicyclist early Tuesday morning.

The fire in the 2900 block of La Mesa Drive was reported at 4:56 a.m. Tuesday, according to a report by the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.

The bicyclist discovered the RV on fire and knocked on the door of the home next to it, awakening the residents inside both homes as the fire extended into the attic, the report stated.

According to the report, when Cape Girardeau Fire Department crews arrived at the scene, the residents had safely evacuated the homes but the fire had spread into the attic of one home and was beginning to ignite the siding of the second nearby home.

Crews made �an aggressive, coordinated attack on the fire,� the report stated, and had the flames under control in about 15 minutes. Firefighting units from Scott City and Jackson assisted.

Firefighting units remained on the scene for the next hour making sure all �hot spots� were extinguished, according to the report.

The roof and attic of the first home and the RV camper were destroyed and the attic of the second home sustained moderate damage, the report stated. A nearby shed also sustained significant fire damage.

Fire and smoke damage is estimated at $250,000, according to the report.

There were no significant injuries, the report stated. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
