POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Kelly hurler Justin Simpher tossed a three-hitter and fanned 10 as the Hawks picked up their first win of the year Tuesday, downing Poplar Bluff 4-1.

Simpher, one of the premier pitchers in the area, went seven innings and walked just two. He also went 4-for-4 at the plate.

Also for Kelly (1-3), Drew Moore went 2-for-4 with a triple and Major Burger went 2-for-2 with a double. Tim Schmitt drove in two runs.

Kelly totaled 12 hits, three more hits than it had in its first three games combined.

"We played well today," Kelly coach Mike Scott said. "We played error-free baseball, had 12 hits and had base runners every inning. There were some good signs."

Poplar Bluff dropped to 1-2.

Chaffee 22, Charleston 7

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Chaffee, which had gotten stellar pitching but had struggled at the plate so far this season, busted out in a big way.

The Red Devils (2-1) hammered pitcher Lezcano Dean, but made some miscues in the field which led to seven unearned runs in the second inning.

"I wasn't real pleased with the way we played defensively," Chaffee coach Brian Horrell said. "We've got to be able to make plays. We made six or seven errors. We won't be able to do that (today) against Notre Dame."

Matt Stroup led the offense with three hits, a homer shy of the cycle. Jeremy Lynn, Travis Hanback, Rusty Duncan and Rocky Portell each had two hits. Hanback drove home four.

Duncan (1-0) went 3 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs on five hits.

Chaffee erupted to a 10-0 lead, but Charleston cut it to 10-7 before the Red Devils pulled away.

St. Vincent 11, Oak Ridge 0

OAK RIDGE, Mo. -- Adam Bockman was a handful on the mound and at the plate as St. Vincent evened its record at 2-2 with a five-inning victory.

Bockman fired a two-hitter while helping his cause with a third-inning grand slam (he also had another hit). Bockman struck out eight Blue Jays and walked two.

Ben Fadler suffered the loss for Oak Ridge (1-2).

St. Vincent grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first, added four runs in the third and two in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Oran 19, Leopold 5

LEOPOLD, Mo. -- Oran had six players with at least two hits as the Eagles scored seven runs in the seventh inning.

Garrett Cook led the Eagles (3-0), going 4-for-5 with a triple and four runs batted in. Nathan Seyer went 3-for-5 with a double and Adam Friga, Joey Bickings, Tyler Cookson and Matt Bucher all had two hits.

Ryne Wood earned the win, going three innings and allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out five.

Advance 8, Richland 4

ESSEX, Mo. -- Adam Rainey struck out 13 and allowed just one hit as the Hornets doubled up Richland.

Rainey walked four and allowed just one hit. All four Richland runs were unearned.

Rylan Dunvin went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and a run batted in for the Hornets (2-0). Chase Robins went 2-for-4.

Delta 12, Zalma 2

DELTA, Mo. -- The Bobcats pounded out 15 hits as they picked up their first win, a five-inning romp.

For Delta (1-3), David Flores went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Vincent Flores was 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Thomas Horn, Pat Wingo and Luke Blattel had two his apiece.

Lance Kinder fanned nine batters in five innings and allowed five hits.

Losing pitcher Steve McCain had two of Zalma's hits.

Zalma took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Delta answered with four runs in the second and six in the fourth for a 10-1 lead.

GOLF

Notre Dame wins quad

JACKSON, Mo. -- Notre Dame easily won a four-team meet over Bloomfield, Doniphan and Malden at Bent Creek.

Notre Dame, led by Tim Buerck's 2-over-par 38, shot a 160.

Nick Martin carded a 39 for Notre Dame, followed by Ryan Hannan with a 41, while Elliot Maschmann and Lucas Klein both posted 42s.

Cape Central 150Jackson 152, Clearwater 196

JACKSON, Mo. -- The Tigers saw their low four golfers shoot in the 30's as Cape Central edged Jackson by two strokes in a triangular meet played on the front nine at Kimbeland Country Club.

Paul York (36), Todd Obergoenner (37), Luke Oliver (38) and Nick Harter (39) accounted for Cape Central's winning total.

Medalist Peyton Sims, a junior, shot an even-par 35 for Jackson (1-1) while Rhett Butler (37), Matt Litz (40) and Kyle Perry (40) contributed to the Indians' team score.

Jackson won the JV match 167-179.

SOFTBALL

Kelly 15, Oak Ridge 2

BENTON, Mo. -- Kelly improved to 1-1 on the spring season with a five-inning victory.

Monica Senciboy and Sara Essner each went 3-for-4 for Kelly.

Dana Essner pitched five innings for the Lady Hawks. She allowed two unearned runs on just one hit and two walks. She fanned eight.

Advance 15, Richland 0

ESSEX, Mo. -- Advance's Amber Bond faced 11 batters and didn't allow a hit as the Lady Hornets rolled past Richland.

Bond walked one and struck out six.

Emily Johnson and Bond each had two hits, while Candice Barber delivered three RBIs.

Oran 11, Leopold 8

LEOPOLD, Mo. -- Ashley Dirnberger had a sixth-inning, bases-loaded triple as Oran opened its season with a victory.

Teresa Hodges picked up the win, striking out 12, walking six and allowing five hits. Jodi VanGennip suffered the loss for Leopold (1-1).

Courtney Fowler went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the seventh. Dirnberger had two hits and three stolen bases.

VanGennip had two hits in the losing effort.

Leopold scored four runs in the fifth inning and took a 6-4 lead into the sixth. Dirnberger's triple was part of a five-run inning.

Scott City 7Meadow Heights 4

SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Amanda O'Brien hurled a two-hitter, with seven strikeouts and two walks, as the Lady Rarms improved to 2-0.

Lindsay Baker had two hits and three RBIs for Scott City while Shana Robinson also added two hits.

St. Vincent 7, Farmington 0

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Caitlin Hoeh scored five goals and assisted on the Squaws' other two as St. Vincent breezed to victory.

Hoeh netted four of her goals in the first half, which ended with St. Vincent (3-2) ahead 5-0.

Kindle Ernst and Dani Emmendorfer accounted for the two other goals. Ernst also had three assists while Becky Kirn and Amanda Carron had two apiece.

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Cape Central's varsity and JV teams swept Charleston with 9-0 wins.

Andrew Eaton posted an 8-0 win over his opponent, Alec Peterson, at the No. 3 position.
