PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. -- Scott City High School's football team, ranked eighth in the state in Class 2A, improved to 2-0 with a 27-14 victory over host Portageville Friday night.

The Rams, who are also 2-0 in SEMO South Conference play, built a 27-0 lead before the Bulldogs (0-2, 0-1) scored two late touchdowns against Scott City's backups.

Marcus Klund rushed for 136 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns while Brad Glenn gained 89 yards on 15 carries and added a TD. Those three scores came in the first half as the Rams built a 21-0 lead.

Jared Schenimann scored the Rams' final TD in the fourth quarter as they went ahead 27-0. Then Portageville made the final score a bit more respectable with its two late touchdowns.

Ste. Genevieve 27

Perryville 14

STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- Perryville suffered its second loss of the season.

The Pirates, tied at 14-14 after the third quarter, could not contain the Dragons in the final quarter. Ste. Genevieve scored 13 unanswered points to secure the victory.

Offensive leaders for the Pirates were tailback Mike Schmidt gaining 143 yards on 14 carries including a 91-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Tyler Abernathy completed five of nine passes with one touchdown throw to receiver Mark Cissell for 62 yards.

Seth Verseman led the defense with eight solo tackles.

VOLLEYBALL

SEMO Tournament

The 13th annual SEMO Specialties & Sports High School Volleyball Classic got under way, with 35 teams competing at three sites on the Southeast Missouri State University campus.

Pool play action saw defending champion Farmington, Jackson, Leopold, Perryville, Meadow Heights and Bernie all emerge with 2-0 records while Notre Dame, Scott City, Advance, Bell City, Woodland, Sikeston and Rosati-Kain all went 1-0-1.

Pool play continues early today, followed by a single-elimination playoff tournament. The championship match is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Show Me Center.

Cape Central 2, OT

ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Cape Central battled the third-ranked team in the St. Louis area on virtually even terms before suffering a 3-2 shootout loss to the host squad in the Francis Howell North Tournament.

The squads battled through two 40-minute halves and two five-minute overtime periods deadlocked at 1-1 before Francis Howell North prevailed in the shootout.

Chad Proffer scored Cape Central's lone goal prior to the shootout as the Tigers fell to 3-3.

"We played well," said Cape Central coach Tom Doyle. "They dominated the game, but we played good defense and (goalkeeper) Trevor (Blattner) made some good saves."

Cape Central will play Francis Howell Central at 8 a.m. today and then another opponent that will be determined.

Naylor 5

NAYLOR, Mo. --Rebecca Cook fired a two-hitter and struck out 13 as Delta improved to 2-1. Cook also walked 12 batters.

Rebecca Below and Tiffany Johnson each had two of the Lady Bobcats' 10 hits.
