BOSTON -- Pedro Martinez, who a day earlier criticized Boston general manager Dan Duquette for saying he was healthy, said Wednesday he hopes to pitch again this season.

Martinez threw in the outfield while the Red Sox took batting practice before playing Cleveland. His next scheduled start is Friday at Yankee Stadium.

"I'm hoping I pitch Friday," he said. "If not I'll pitch Saturday, Sunday or Monday."

Martinez said Tuesday that Red Sox team physician Dr. Bill Morgan had told him he has thinning of the rotator cuff, but that Anaheim team physician Dr. Lewis Yocum had told him there was a minor tear.

Said Red Sox manager Joe Kerrigan: "I talked to him. He felt a lot better than he did (Tuesday). He wants to go Friday. I talked to him and I said, 'Ped, it's your hands.' He said he was ready to go."

On Tuesday, Martinez said, "What I don't appreciate is Duquette saying I'm healthy because then it is not true. I'm doing the best I can to help the team, but I'm not 100 percent."
