Gary W. Rust, co-owner of The Daily Statesman in Dexter and The Daily Dunklin Democrat in Kennett, has purchased shares of co-owner Sherm Smith; in making ownership transition, Barbara Hill was named publisher of The Statesman and acting general manager of The Democrat.

Dr. Robert E. Leestamper, president of Southeast Missouri State University, will head Public Service Division of United Way campaign to support 11 community organizations; he will be responsible for contributions from state, federal and local government employees and those with schools, colleges and agencies who benefit from United Way.

50 years ago: Sept. 6, 1951

Petition signed by all 22 of Cape Girardeau's registrars goes out to Sen. D.W. Gilmore of Benton and Rep. Robert G. Brady of Cape Girardeau County urging them "to take the necessary steps for a complete new registration of voters to our city"; move was initiated by Mrs. P.J. Greer, chairman of Board of Registrars, while all were together at Common Pleas Courthouse on last day of registration for referendum Sept. 21 on sale of liquor by drink.

Probable drop of from 8 to 10 percent in enrollment of State College this fall is predicted by President W.W. Parker; he lists stiffer draft law and inflation as causes; enrollment last fall was 1,272.

75 years ago: Sept. 6, 1926

First meeting of 21 teams and special committee soliciting funds for $300,000 bridge project is held at noon; Dan Weigle, promoting campaign, says teams reported $55,000 raised today, whole special committee came through with $20,000, making total for first day of $75,000 in round numbers; special committee had previously raised $100,000.

Although annual Cape Fair is nearly four weeks away, officials are rapidly completing arrangements for what they believe will be most successful exhibition in 68 years of institution; they expect record farm exhibits, livestock entries and dozens of features to provide entertainment.- Sharon K.
