With almost 1,200 members, the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce wants to break the 1,300-member plateau by next May when the annual area-wide membership drive is held.

In order to get a jump on that number, the Chamber will hold a "Downtown Blitz" on Friday, Oct. 12. The goal is to sign-up 20 new members.

"This mini-blitz will help put us in a position to hit 1,300 members during the big drive next May," said Jeff Glenn, director of membership development.

Glenn said members of the Chamber Ambassadors, a committee of 15 volunteers who regularly attend ribbon cuttings, grand openings and other special events, will be downtown from 8 a.m. until noon to call on potential members.

The Chamber will also be accepting new memberships from other parts of the city.

Following the "Downtown Blitz," the Chamber Ambassadors will visit current downtown members during the afternoon to thank them for their support.

Glenn said businesses that want to be listed in the Chamber's annual membership directory need to sign-up soon.

"The blitz is the last chance to get in the new directory, which is printed in late October," said Glenn, adding that about 2,000 membership directories will be distributed next January.
