Benton - Nineteen-year-old Benton woman found shot to death on Interstate 55 off-ramp early yesterday morning had left home of friends in Sikeston only 25 minutes earlier; Angela Michelle Lawless was found in her car at about 1:25 a.m. Sunday at end of northbound I-55 off-ramp.

Old St. Vincent's Catholic Church, which many feared would be abandoned or destroyed, has won reprieve, but financial burden has been placed on shoulders of those who want to attend there; decision, coming after weeks of deliberation by church officials, is announced by the Rev. Joseph E. Gosche, pastor of St. Mary's Cathedral, and the Rev. Martin J. Culligan, C.M., pastor of St. Vincent's; old St. Vincent's will be given status of Chapel of Ease of St. Mary's.

Benton - Scott County Court in Benton has written Gov. Joseph P. Teasdale asking for state intervention in efforts by State Historical Preservation office to save old building scheduled for razing; building, located on county property, is site for new Magistrate Court building.

50 years ago: Nov. 9, 1952

Solemn closing of Forty Hours Devotion is held in afternoon at St. Mary's Catholic Church; closing of three-day devotion includes procession through church, as well as solemn chanting of Litany of all Saints; the Rev. Joseph Cronin, S.T.L., of New Madrid is celebrant, assisted by the Revs. Charles Schmidt of Charleston as deacon and Thomas Wesner, C.M., of Holy Family parish, as subdeacon.

New Church of Christ building at Bloomfield and Boulevard is formally opened with afternoon services; about 300 people attend service and hear speaker, Jess H. Hall, minister of Broadway Church of Christ in Paducah, Ky.

75 years ago: Nov. 9, 1927

Dean R.S. Douglass says there will be largest graduating classes this year in history of Teachers College; May class will run over 50, largest for this time of year, while August class will also be largest, with over 60 members.

Morley - Two unmasked bandits, accompanied by woman driving their high-powered motor car, hold up Scott County Bank at Morley in morning, escaping with loot estimated in excess of $5,000; they flee along Highway 61 to south, and reports in afternoon say they passed through Sikeston, going toward east on Highway 60.
