The Knights of Columbus in Cape Girardeau will participate in the Missouri Knights 21st annual Tootsie Roll fund-raising Drive Oct. 18, 19 and 20.

Tootsie Rolls will be given in exchange for a donation to people wearing bright yellow aprons at all major shopping areas and at the city banks.

The theme of the fund drive is "To Care is to Share about the Mentally Retarded."

Hilary Schmittzehe, supreme master of the Knights of Columbus and chairman of the Tootsie Roll Drive, said that organizations such as the Association for Retarded Citizens at V.I.P Industries, Special Olympics, food programs, sheltered workshops and recreation and education programs are some of the local programs that will receive money from the drive.

Funds from the program are also responsible for the Knights of Columbus Development Center at Cardinal Glennon Memorial Hospital for Children in St. Louis.

Schmittzehe said that the development center is where parents can take a child born with a problem for free diagnostic testing.

"Half of the money from the Tootsie Roll Drive goes to Cardinal Glennon," said Schmittzehe, "and half goes back to help people in the community."

Last year the Tootsie Roll Drive locally raised $4,000. "We would like to do $5,000 this year in the Cape area," said Schmittzehe.

Last year the Knights of Columbus in Missouri raised $500,000. Their goal this is $525,000.

"We thank the citizens who have helped us in the past," said Schmittzehe. "We hope for their continued support."
