THE PUBLIC MIND: ACADEMIC STANDARDS WILL ALLOW COACHES TO COMPETE
(Letter to the Editor ~ 03/04/92)
To the Editor: Since Bill Heitland's article entitled "Noble or No-Win Cause" in the February 23, 1992 edition of the Southeast Missourian I have been able to reflect on, with assistance from parties on and off campus, just how our admissions policy influences the recruitment of student-athletes. Based upon the recent discussions, it seems prudent I write with an objective to clarify...

It was the last of the original five Spanish districts. Except for a road that Gov.-Gen. Baron de Carondelet requested Lorimier to build connecting the districts of New Madrid, Ste. ...

NEWTON'S LAW: NICE SUITS AND VACATIONS ASIDE, IS BIG CITY LIFE REALLY WORTH IT?
(Column ~ 03/04/92)
Nice cars. Nice suits. Nice vacations. Nice lifestyle, if you regard getting rich with no visible means of support as nice. Al Pacino spoiled the image. He was glamorous in hoodlum garb. John Gotti, the man who maintains a tan when jailed for a year, does little better in helping us sort out perceptions. His serene disposition is one more suited to a TV preacher. It belies the violent world he commanded...

THE PUBLIC MIND: KEEP COMPLAINING ABOUT CONGRESSIONAL PAY INCREASES
(Letter to the Editor ~ 03/04/92)
To the Editor: I wonder if I am the only one disgusted with our overpaid Congress? I have just learned they received a $4,000 cost of living raise in the January pay check. This was included in the big pay raise they snuck through when they were alone in the meeting room. So we taxpayers didn't find out until President Bush had signed the bill into law. This cost of living adjustment will go on forever ... all Congress has to do is accept it...

THE PUBLIC MIND: `ENOUGH IS ENOUGH' WHEN IT COMES TO APPROVING TAXES
(Letter to the Editor ~ 03/04/92)
To the Editor: I have never written to an Editor before but feel that it is time to speak out opposing the way our Missouri Legislators are telling us what we must do by voting in their pet: "Taxes and more taxes." I must accept the 6-cent gas tax hike as I didn't have a chance to vote on it but I am sick and tired of them trying to tax us for education without we the people being able to vote on it. They surely know how we feel about another tax increase after what happened to Proposition B...

LEND ME YOUR EAR: SLIPUP LEADS TO A DELIGHTFUL EVENT: EVER WRONG A NUMBER?
(Column ~ 03/04/92)
Probably everyone who can communicate is familiar with the cliche that if you have never made a mistake you have never done anything. I had an aunt who claimed this was the reason she never did anything: she was afraid she'd make a mistake. The truth was, she had so much fun laughing about this shortcoming of hers that she succeeded in entertaining almost everyone willing to listen. So despite her low resolve, my aunt led a useful life...
