This wild mallard hen was sitting on thin ice. The pool she sat on was very shallow, with bits of vegetation extending above the ice. Although wild ducks are able to fly at night, this hen stayed put while I shined a light on it. I placed two beanbags on the ground at the icy water's edge to cushion the camera.
