LETTERS: POEM HONORS FIREFIGHTERS EVERYWHERE

This article comes from our electronic archive and has not been reviewed. It may contain glitches.

To the editor:

This is a poem I wrote in honor of my son, Mike Sticht, a 17-year veteran firefighter, and my daughter, Anna Gholson, who just completed probation, and all of their fellow firefighters:

Description of a Firefighter

A firefighter is a special breed.

It isn't anything that shows.

You can't spot them in a crowd.

They look just like you and me.

The difference is inside of them,

In their hearts and minds and souls.

Something that makes them want to help,

Makes them risk their lives for yours,

Causes them to put their cares aside

When you need them.

It doesn't matter what they look like,

What language they speak

Or whether their shirt buttons

From the left or right.

They are human beings with something extra.

We call each one a hero.
