After a trio of public hearings during the preceding weeks, the Cape Girardeau County Commission approved speed limit changes to County Roads 330 and 335, reducing them from 60 mph to 40 mph.

“We’ve had all the public hearings that we need on this. At this point, we’re ready to approve the ordinance as submitted,” Presiding Commissioner Clint Tracy said during the commission’s Monday, June 24, meeting.

Now that the commissioners have approved the changes, they must post at least four public notifications of the changes in conspicuous places. The speed limit changes will then take effect 15 days after the signs are posted.

Residents on the two streets had petitioned the commissioners to reduce their speed limits because of potential safety concerns.

Auditing services

County Auditor Pete Frazier discussed needing to bid for auditing services, putting together a multi-year Request for Proposal (RFP) option such as his office has had in the past.

“What that does is it provides us with locking in our prices for extended period of years to give us a little better deal,” Frazier told the commissioners. “It benefited us on this last one because COVID hit and as a result there were multiple federal grants and a little more activity that had to be monitored and taken care of, so we locked into a really reasonable price. We definitely got the benefit of it over the last few years.”

The audit would need to be completed by the end of 2024 in preparation for 2025.

Landscaping requests

The county commissioners accepted two RFP responses for landscaping projects from Cassi Bock Landscaping of Jackson and Willingham Outdoor of Cape Girardeau. Tracy said the commission will refer these proposals to the county’s Parks Department.
