James Kuss

James H. Kuss, 86, of Scott City peacefully passed away Thursday, June 27, 2024, at his home.

He was born March 26, 1938, to Joseph R. and Lillian A. Downs Kuss in Cape Girardeau.

James graduated from Cape Girardeau Central High School and attended a year at Southeast Missouri State University before proudly serving in the U.S. Navy.

After the Navy, he worked in construction and as a bookkeeper for Kuss Construction. In the 1970s, he helped operate Cape Farm and Hardware. Later, the family owned Graffiti’s Nightclub. He went on to run Lorberg Memorial Funeral Home with family.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Elks and the Knights of Columbus.

James is survived by three daughters, Teresa Kuss (Brad Robertson), Linda Kuss Etten (Chris Etten) and Diana Warren (Clyde Warren); four grandchildren, Jessica Metzger (Kyle), Deanna Girard (Jason Randell), Gabriel Eggimann and Will Warren; two great-grandchildren, Eli Girard and Clyde Randell-Warren III; and a sister-in-law, Betty Kuss.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lillian Kuss; wife, Rita Kuss; and brother, Bill Kuss.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, with parish prayers at 7 p.m., followed by Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Crain Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. Jesse Hiett officiating.

Burial, with military honors, will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests, with gratitude, memorial contributions be made to St. Mary’s and/or the Knights of Columbus. Memorial contribution envelopes will be available.
