Valeria E. “Val” Tuschhoff, 89, of Jackson, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Chateau Girardeau in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Nov. 28, 1934, the daughter of Gustave William and Mathilda Pohlman Zoellner. Val married Norman Gene Tuschhoff on July 18, 1953, in Altenburg. He died May 19, 2013.

Val attended the Arnsberg School near Friedheim. After she and Norman married, they moved to St. Louis and later returned to Jackson. She has been a longtime member of Emanuel United Church of Christ, where she served on various committees, including the church council. She also was active in the Women’s Fellowship group and Bethany Circle and was a former Sunday school teacher.

Val owned and operated Val’s Upholstery business in uptown Jackson for more than 20 years. Her involvement in the business led her to be very active in civic affairs and take great interest in the community and the citizens of Jackson and Cape Girardeau County.

She was elected to the Jackson City Council representing Ward 3 from 1991 to 2007. She was a member of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, serving as its president 2000-2001. Val served on the boards of the Planning and Zoning Commission, Division of Aging, Women’s Safehouse and Cape County Mental Health.

She was a member of America Businesswomen’s Association and a former president and Cape Girardeau County Breakfast Rotary Club.

For the love and tireless devotion to her community and its citizens, she was presented the R.A. Fulenwider award in 2016.

Val will be remembered for her warm and welcoming smile.

Loving survivors include a son, Leon Tuschhoff of Jackson; daughter, Saundra (Don) Perry of Oak Ridge; two grandchildren, Travis Tuschhoff of Iowa City, Iowa, and Don (Ashley) Perry III of Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia; two great grandchildren, Ava and Wyatt; and sister-in-law, Esther Barks.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 15, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The Rev. Sam Roethemeyer will conduct the funeral at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
