Back-to-School Sales Tax holiday this weekend across state

Missouri’s Back-to-School Sales Tax holiday will come to Cape Girardeau on Friday, Aug. 2 through Sunday, Aug. 4.

Back-to-school purchases such as clothing and school supplies are exempt from sales tax for the time period.

The sales tax exemption is statewide, with local jurisdictions — municipalities and counties — no longer having the ability to opt out of participating. In the past, the City of Cape Girardeau usually did not participate.

Of course the city opted out to give its citizens a break. They are too busy giving tax breaks to every developer like the mall and private businesses on Broadway.

Does local tax apply to the sale of qualifying sales tax holiday items during the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday?

No, starting January 1, 2023, the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday exempts all state and local sales or use taxes during the exemption period.

That's on me, fxpwt, not the newspaper or the rest of City staff. I've been explaining the opt-out for years and apparently missed the memo, or even forgot, about the change. I am sorry I made a mistake. When their staff is available, I'm sure they'll fix it here.
