Dorothy Summers

Dorothy "Dot" Martha Summers, 86, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 3, 1938, in Cape Girardeau to Frank Joseph and Mary Rose Eeftink Brockmeyer. She and Paul R. Summers were married May 16, 1959, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Cape Girardeau.

Dorothy was a graduate of the former Cape Girardeau Catholic High School, now known as Notre Dame Regional High School.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral and the church’s St. Ann’s Sodality.

Dorothy’s first job was as a candy striper at the old Saint Francis Hospital. After high school, she worked at First Federal Savings & Loan, was a secretary at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and also worked 11 years at Drury Hotels.

Survivors include her husband, Paul R. Summers of Cape Girardeau; son, Brian A. (Joy) Summers of High Ridge; daughter, Martha A. (Keith) Sander of Jackson; four sisters, Bertha (Paul) Essner of Benton, Frieda Seyer of Cape Girardeau, Frances (Joe) Willenbring of Jackson and Imelia Seyer of Jackson; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Schreckenberg of Hillsboro and Donald James of Cape Girardeau; two grandchildren, Dakota H. (Brittany) Sander of Oak Ridge and Cheyenne R. Sander of Jefferson City; and a great-grandchild, Dawson Randol Cole Sander.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Alfred and Ruth Brockmeyer; three sisters, Sr. Rose Francis Brockmeyer, S.S.N.D., Julia James and Theresa Schreckenberg; and two brothers-in-law, Joe Seyer and Charlie Seyer.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, with the Rev. Jesse Hiett officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
