Cape County History Center to hold concert of traditional music

Mike Compton and Joe Newberry will be coming to Jackson on Thursday, Aug. 15. They will be bringing their blend of traditional and new American music to a concert at the Cape Girardeau County History Center, 102 High St.

Compton and Newberry are known for their contributions to American traditional music. Their performances honor the past while forging a path toward a new tradition. The duo’s music resonates with fans of bluegrass, early country, blues, gospel, and string band music.

Compton and Newberry’s combined pedigree includes multiple International Bluegrass Music Association and Grammy nominations and wins, according to a news release. Their talents have been showcased on "A Prairie Home Companion", the Transatlantic Sessions, and the soundtracks for "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "Cold Mountain". They have collaborated with a diverse range of artists and styles, further cementing their role in modernizing and preserving American traditional music, the release states.

Those who attend the concert can look forward to an intimate atmosphere. The Cape Girardeau County History Center provides a unique venue, enhancing the experience with its historical context. The program will feature a combination of well-known songs and new compositions, celebrating a shared musical heritage.

The concert will begin at 6 p.m. While the event is free, there is a requested donation of $25 at the door.
