Alyssa currently works in the Advertising Department at the Southeast Missourian. She has recently been swept into the world of wedding planning, but also enjoys reading, spending time with her fiance and their son, and traveling to historic places across the United States. DIY

When someone says, "Do it yourself," what do you think of first? The first image that comes to my mind is my Dad, sitting in his chair on Saturday mornings watching the DIY network and HGTV (or as my Mother and Brother lovingly call it, the SOYA channel. Sit on your.... well, you get the picture.

But DIY can actually mean something, especially now, in this economy. You can have a beautiful wedding for less than $20,000, $15,000, $10,000 & under $5,000. All it takes is a little creativity and a DIY attitude.

That's where my best friend Kelly and I come in...that is the whole point of this blog. To get some DIY ideas out there! Open up your imagination, tap into your hidden (or not so hidden) creativity and get started!

I am going to write a few times a week about what I am doing for my wedding to keep costs down, tricks of the wedding business that can mark up your costs (sometimes hidden by confusing terminology), examples of weddings incorporating DIY ideas, Kelly's wedding progress and projects and various odds and ends. If you have an idea or something to say, feel free to do so!

I may even call on your opinion on such things as bouquets, invitations, decorations and food! I hope you have fun reading this as much as I do writing it!

Girl, I know how hard it can be to plan a wedding on a short budget. Luckily, I'm a decent seamstress, so I already made my dress. I have also picked out a nice country church and reception hall overlooking a beautiful lake, and have my invitations ready.

All I need now is a man, lol! I'm sure one will come someday, and I am going to be ready NOW!

Though at my age, I never expect to marry (again), I look forward to reading your blog! Your tips will certainly affect other aspects of life beyond a wedding - and be fun to read :).

To Alyssa and all other young ladies who are planning a wedding, either with a set date or just dreaming about "sometime". I am a 72-year-old man, happily married for almost 50-years. I owned a bakery for 15-years and produced many wedding cakes in that period of time. I do know somethings about weddings. The one thing I would offer at this time is simple. A very pretty wedding cake does NOT have to be huge. The other thing I want you to remember is something I read many years age in "Ask Ann Landers" or "Dear Abby". Whichever it was she gave a very thought provoking statement to a girl who was not engaged but was already looking forward to her wedding. The statement was simply this; "Are you planning a wedding to get married or are you planning the get married so you can have a wedding. To all your young lady readers I advise you to give her statement serious thought.
