Dr. James Chapman, a Cape Girardeau cardiologist, attended the Annual Advisory Board Meeting of Advanced Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 7-10.

He moderated a workshop on managing complications including restenosis with balloon angioplasty. Other faculty members included Dr. Geoffrey Hartzler of MidAmerica Heart Institute in Kansas City, Dr. Richard Stack of Duke Medical Center and Dr. Donald Baim of Harvard University.

Chapman is affiliated with Cardiovascular Consultants of Cape Girardeau and is a member of the medical staffs of Southeast Missouri Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center.

"Food Festival '91: Earthly Delights," a communications campaign created by Julie Low Katinas of the American Heart Association, St. Louis Chapter, has won an International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Bronze Quill Award.

The award was presented to Katinas, daughter of Joe and Lauchette Low of Cape Girardeau, at the annual St. Louis Bronze Quill Awards Ceremony at the Missouri Botanical Garden in May.

She received an honorable mention in a special category, environmental communications. According to IABC's Barb Pierce, St. Louis is the first chapter in the country to have an environmental category.

The Bronze Quill competition is open to all area communicators and entries are judged by IABC members in other cities.

Judges recognized the campaign for its innovative style and its media successes including five television stories, photographs and feature stories in many St. Louis newspapers and an article in a national vegetarian newsletter.

Katinas is a 1985 graduate of the University of Missouri-School of Journalism and a 1981 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School.

Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) has announced that its mutual funds investment advisor and broker-dealer subsidiary, AAL Capital Management Corporation, attained $1 billion in assets under management on May 28.

The benchmark achievement occurred less than five years after the subsidiary first opened for business in July 1987.

"I'm extremely pleased with our performance," said Rochelle Lamm Wallach, AAL Capital Management Corporation president. "The AAL Mutual Funds have been built upon the belief that a conservative approach to investing is best suited to the majority of today's Americans. It's very gratifying to me that in less than five years, more than 130,000 investors have agreed with our common-sense approach to building and preserving wealth."

ST. LOUIS Spartech Corporation (AMEX-SEH) announced a significant increase in its operating earnings for the second quarter ended May 2.

Spartech's president and chief executive officer, Bradley B. Buechler, said second quarter operating earnings, after reflecting corporate expenses, were $2.6 million, representing a 60 percent increase from the $1.6 million reported for the same period last year.

This increase resulted in net earnings of $1.5 million, or $.07 per share, for the second quarter of fiscal year 1992, after reflecting the effect of shares issued as a result of the company's recently completed debt-to-equity restructuring.

Net earnings for the second quarter of 1991 were $9,000, or a net loss of $.08 per share after provision for preferred stock dividends.

Revenues were $45.4 million for the second quarter of 1992, an increase of more than 13 percent from last year.

Operating earnings were $4.8 million for the first six months of fiscal year 1992, a 65 percent increase from last year. Net earnings were $1.9 million for the first six months of fiscal year 1992, compared to a net loss of $188,000 per share for the first half of fiscal year 1991.
