Some 170,475 new businesses opened last year, up slightly from the 168,158 created in 1995. The new businesses created 846,973 jobs, up 14.7 percent from the 738,606 in 1995.

The U.S. Labor Department reported that jobs grew by 2.6 million in 1996.
